“Ah, yes, thank you, Madame. By the way, does your husband smoke?”

She stared at him as she stood poised for departure.

“Yes.”

“A pipe?”

“No. Cigarettes and cigars.”

“Ah! Thank you.”

She lingered (она помедлила; to linger — задерживаться; медлить, мешкать; колебаться), her eyes watching him curiously (ее глаза наблюдали за ним с любопытством). She lingered, her eyes watching him curiously. Lovely eyes they were, dark and almond-shaped with very long black lashes that swept the exquisite pallor of her cheeks. Her lips, very scarlet in the foreign fashion, were parted just a little. She looked exotic and beautiful.

“Why did you ask me that (почему вы спросили меня об этом)?”

“Madame,” Poirot waved an airy hand (Пуаро изящно взмахнул рукой; airy — полный воздуха; изящный, воздушный, грациозный), “detectives have to ask all sorts of questions (детективам приходится задавать разные: «всех сортов» вопросы). “Very important, Madame (очень важно, мадам).”

She asked curiously (она спросила с любопытством): “Are you really a detective, then (значит, вы действительно детектив/сыщик)?”

“At your service, Madame (к вашим услугам, мадам).”

“Madame,” Poirot waved an airy hand, “detectives have to ask all sorts of questions. For instance, perhaps you will tell me the colour of your dressing-gown?”

She stared at him. Then she laughed. “it is corn-coloured chiffon. Is that really important?”

“Very important, Madame.”

She asked curiously: “Are you really a detective, then?”

“At your service, Madame.”

“I thought (а я думала) there were no detectives on the train (что в этом поезде нет сыщиков) when it passed through Jugo-Slavia (когда он проходит по Югославии) — not until one got to Italy (пока не приезжает в Италию).”

“I am not a Jugo-Slavian detective, Madame (я не югославский детектив, мадам). I am an international detective (я международный детектив).”

“You belong to the League of Nations (вы служите Лиге Наций; to belong — принадлежать, быть собственностью; принадлежать, быть частью)?”

“I belong to the world, Madame (я служу миру, мадам),” said Poirot dramatically (театрально сообщил Пуаро; dramatically — драматически, театрально). He went on (он продолжил): “I work mainly in London (главным образом, я работаю в Лондоне). “I belong to the world, Madame,” said Poirot dramatically. He went on: “I work mainly in London. You speak English?” he added in that language.

“I speak a leetle, yes (я говорью ниемного; leetle = little).” Her accent was charming (ее акцент был очаровательным; accent — ударение; произношение, акцент). Poirot bowed once more (Пуаро снова поклонился).

“We will not detain you further, Madame (мы вас больше не задержим, мадам). You see, it was not so very terrible (видите, это было не так уж ужасно).”

“No,” said Poirot. “Two people who saw nothing (двое человек, которые ничего не видели) and heard nothing (и ничего не слышали).”

“Shall we now see the Italian (может, мы теперь встретимся с итальянцем)?”

Poirot did not reply for a moment (Пуаро ответил не сразу: «не отвечал какое-то мгновение»). He was studying a grease spot (он изучал жирное пятно) on a Hungarian diplomatic passport (на венгерском дипломатическом паспорте).

She smiled, inclined her head and departed.

“Elle est jolie femme,” said M. Bouc appreciatively. He sighed. “Well, that did not advance us much.”

“No,” said Poirot. “Two people who saw nothing and heard nothing.”

“Shall we now see the Italian?”

Poirot did not reply for a moment. He was studying a grease spot on a Hungarian diplomatic passport.
