Шрифт:
sleepless ['sli:plIs], gift [gIft], bestow [bI'stqu]
When the Wizard was given this message he was so frightened that he sent word for them to come to the Throne Room at four minutes after nine o'clock the next morning. He had once met the Winged Monkeys in the Land of the West, and he did not wish to meet them again.
The four travelers passed a sleepless night, each thinking of the gift Oz had promised to bestow on him. Dorothy fell asleep only once, and then she dreamed she was in Kansas, where Aunt Em was telling her how glad she was to have her little girl at home again.
Promptly at nine o'clock the next morning the green-whiskered soldier came to them (ровно в девять часов следующего утра солдат с зеленой бородой пришел к ним; promptly — быстро, сразу; точно, своевременно), and four minutes later they all went into the Throne Room of the Great Oz (и четырьмя минутами позже все они вошли в Тронный Зал Великого Оза).
Of course each one of them expected to see the Wizard in the shape he had taken before (конечно, каждый из них ожидал увидеть Волшебника в том самом облике, который тот принимал ранее), and all were greatly surprised when they looked about and saw no one at all in the room (и все они были сильно удивлены, когда, осмотревшись вокруг, они вовсе никого не увидели в комнате). They kept close to the door and closer to one another (они держались близко к двери, и еще ближе друг к другу), for the stillness of the empty room was more dreadful (потому что спокойствие пустой комнаты было более ужасающим; stillness — неподвижность, спокойствие, тишина) than any of the forms they had seen Oz take (чем любой из обликов, которые, как они видели, принимал Оз).
promptly ['prOm(p)tlI], whiskered ['wIskqd], stillness ['stIlnIs]
Promptly at nine o'clock the next morning the green-whiskered soldier came to them, and four minutes later they all went into the Throne Room of the Great Oz.
Of course each one of them expected to see the Wizard in the shape he had taken before, and all were greatly surprised when they looked about and saw no one at all in the room. They kept close to the door and closer to one another, for the stillness of the empty room was more dreadful than any of the forms they had seen Oz take.
Presently they heard a solemn Voice (вскоре они услышали торжественный Голос; solemn — священный; торжественный), that seemed to come from somewhere near the top of the great dome (который, казалось, раздавался откуда-то из-под огромного купола: «рядом с верхом огромного купола»), and it said (и который сказал): "I am Oz, the Great and Terrible (я — Оз, Великий и Грозный). Why do you seek me (почему вы ищете меня)?"
They looked again in every part of the room (они снова взглянули на каждую часть комнаты = заглянули в каждый уголок комнаты), and then, seeing no one, Dorothy asked (и затем, /после того как они/ никого не увидели, Дороти спросила), "Where are you (где ты)?"
"I am everywhere (я везде)," answered the Voice, "but to the eyes of common mortals I am invisible (но для глаз простых смертных я невидим; common — общий, всеобщий; обыкновенный, простой). I will now seat myself upon my throne (сейчас я сяду на свой трон), that you may converse with me (чтобы вы смогли разговаривать со мной)." Indeed, the Voice seemed just then to come straight from the throne itself (в самом деле, казалось, что Голос шел прямо от самого трона); so they walked toward it and stood in a row while Dorothy said (тогда они подошли к нему и встали в ряд, а Дороти сказала): "We have come to claim our promise, O Oz (мы пришли потребовать исполнения обещанного нам, о Оз; promise — обещание)."
presently ['prez(q)ntlI], mortal [mO:tl], invisible [In'vIzqbl], converse [kqn'vq:s]
Presently they heard a solemn Voice, that seemed to come from somewhere near the top of the great dome, and it said: "I am Oz, the Great and Terrible. Why do you seek me?" They looked again in every part of the room, and then, seeing no one, Dorothy asked, "Where are you?"
"I am everywhere," answered the Voice, "but to the eyes of common mortals I am invisible. I will now seat myself upon my throne, that you may converse with me." Indeed, the Voice seemed just then to come straight from the throne itself; so they walked toward it and stood in a row while Dorothy said: "We have come to claim our promise, O Oz."
"What promise (какого еще обещанного)?" asked Oz.
"You promised to send me back to Kansas when the Wicked Witch was destroyed (ты обещал отправить меня обратно в Канзас, когда Злая Ведьма будет уничтожена)," said the girl.
"And you promised to give me brains (и ты обещал дать мне мозги)," said the Scarecrow.
"And you promised to give me a heart (и ты обещал дать мне сердце)," said the Tin Woodman.
"And you promised to give me courage (и ты обещал дать мне смелость)," said the Cowardly Lion.
"Is the Wicked Witch really destroyed (а действительно ли Злая Ведьма уничтожена)?" asked the Voice, and Dorothy thought it trembled a little (спросил Голос, и Дороти подумала, что он немного дрожал).
"Yes," she answered, "I melted her with a bucket of water (я растопила ее ведром воды)."
promise ['prOmIs], brain [breIn], heart [hQ:t], courage ['kArIdZ], bucket ['bAkIt]
"What promise?" asked Oz.
"You promised to send me back to Kansas when the Wicked Witch was destroyed," said the girl.
"And you promised to give me brains," said the Scarecrow.
"And you promised to give me a heart," said the Tin Woodman.
"And you promised to give me courage," said the Cowardly Lion.
"Is the Wicked Witch really destroyed?" asked the Voice, and Dorothy thought it trembled a little.
"Yes," she answered, "I melted her with a bucket of water."
"Dear me (Боже мой)," said the Voice, "how sudden (как неожиданно)! Well, come to me tomorrow, for I must have time to think it over (что ж, приходите ко мне завтра, потому что мне нужно время, чтобы /все/ это обдумать)."
"You've had plenty of time already (у тебя уже было достаточно времени; plenty — изобилие, достаток; множество, избыток)," said the Tin Woodman angrily (сказал Железный Дровосек сердито).
"We shan't wait a day longer (мы не станем ждать ни дня дольше)," said the Scarecrow.
"You must keep your promises to us (ты должен сдержать свои обещания, /которые ты дал/ нам)!" exclaimed Dorothy (воскликнула Дороти).
The Lion thought it might be as well to frighten the Wizard (Лев подумал, что стоит, пожалуй, напугать Волшебника), so he gave a large, loud roar (поэтому он издал внушительный громкий рык), which was so fierce and dreadful (который был таким свирепым и страшным) that Toto jumped away from him in alarm (что Тото отпрыгнул от него в страхе; alarm — тревога, сигнал опасности; смятение, страх) and tipped over the screen that stood in a corner (и опрокинул ширму, которая стояла в углу; to tip — наклонять; опрокидывать). As it fell with a crash (когда она с грохотом упала) they looked that way (они посмотрели в том направлении), and the next moment all of them were filled with wonder (и в следующее же мгновение все из них преисполнились удивления).
sudden ['sAdn], plenty ['plentI], angrily ['xNgrIlI], alarm [q'lQ:m], screen [skri:n]
"Dear me," said the Voice, "how sudden! Well, come to me tomorrow, for I must have time to think it over."

"We shan't wait a day longer," said the Scarecrow.
"You must keep your promises to us!" exclaimed Dorothy.
