Then Pau Amma said, ‘That is good, but I do not choose yet. Look! there is that Man who talked to you at the Very Beginning. If he had not taken up your attention I should not have grown tired of waiting and run away, and all this would never have happened. What will he do for me?’

And the Man said (и Человек сказал), ‘If you choose (если ты согласен), I will make a Magic (я сотворю Волшебство), so that both the deep water and the dry ground will be a home for you and your children (так что и глубокие воды, и сухая земля будут домом для тебя и твоих детей) — so that you shall be able to hide both on the land and in the sea (так что вы сможете спрятаться как на суше, так и в море).’

And Pau Amma said (и Пау Амма сказал), ‘I do not choose yet (я еще не выбрал). Look! there is that girl (послушай! вот та девочка) who saw me running away at the Very Beginning (которая видела, как я убегал в Самом Начале). If she had spoken then (если бы она тогда сказала), the Eldest Magician would have called me back (Старейший Волшебник позвал бы меня обратно), and all this would never have happened (и всего этого никогда бы не случилось). What will she do for me (что она сделает для меня)?’

And Pau Amma said, ‘I do not choose yet. Look! there is that girl who saw me running away at the Very Beginning. If she had spoken then, the Eldest Magician would have called me back, and all this would never have happened. What will she do for me?’

And the little girl-daughter said (и маленькая девочка-дочка сказала), ‘This is a good nut that I am eating (это хороший орех, что я ем). If you choose (если ты согласен), I will make a Magic (я сотворю волшебство) and I will give you this pair of scissors, very sharp and strong (и дам тебе эту пару ножниц, очень острых и прочных), so that you and your children can eat cocoa-nuts like this all day long (так что ты и твои дети смогут есть кокосовые орехи вот так весь день) when you come up from the Sea to the land (когда вы поднимитесь из Моря на сушу); or you can dig a Pusat Tasek for yourself with the scissors (или вы сможете выкопать Пусат Тасек для себя ножницами) that belong to you when there is no stone or hole near by (которые будут принадлежать вам, когда не будет камня или ямки поблизости); and when the earth is too hard (а когда земля будет слишком твердой), by the help of these same scissors you can run up a tree (при помощи этих же самых ножниц вы сможете взобраться на дерево).’

And Pau Amma said (а Пау Амма сказал), ‘I do not choose yet (я еще не выбрал), for, all soft as I am (ибо совершенно мягкий, как я есть = с таким мягким телом, как у меня сейчас), these gifts would not help me (эти подарки не помогли бы мне). Give me back my shell, O Eldest Magician (верни мне мой панцирь, О Старейший Волшебник), and then I will play your play (и тогда я буду играть в твою игру).’

And the Eldest Magician said (и Старейший Волшебник сказал), ‘I will give it back, Pau Amma (я верну его, Пау Амма), for eleven months of the year (на одиннадцать месяцев в году); but on the twelfth month of every year (но на двенадцатый месяц каждого года) it shall grow soft again (он станет мягким опять), to remind you and all your children (чтобы напомнить тебе и твоим детям) that I can make magics (что я могу творить волшебство), and to keep you humble, Pau Amma (и чтобы сохранить тебя скромным = сохранить твою скромность, Пау Амма); for I see that if you can run both under the water and on land (ибо я вижу, что если ты будешь легко передвигаться как под водой, так и на суше; to run — бегать, легко двигаться, быстро перемещаться), you will grow too bold (ты станешь слишком наглым); and if you can climb trees and crack nuts and dig holes with your scissors (а если ты будешь лазать по деревьям, и щелкать орехи, и рыть норки своими ножницами), you will grow too greedy, Pau Amma (ты станешь слишком жадным, Пау Амма).’

And the Eldest Magician said, ‘I will give it back, Pau Amma, for eleven months of the year; but on the twelfth month of every year it shall grow soft again, to remind you and all your children that I can make magics, and to keep you humble, Pau Amma; for I see that if you can run both under the water and on land, you will grow too bold; and if you can climb trees and crack nuts and dig holes with your scissors, you will grow too greedy, Pau Amma.’

Then Pau Amma thought a little and said (тогда Пау Амма немного подумал и сказал), ‘I have made my choice (я сделал выбор). I will take all the gifts (я приму все подарки).’

Then the Eldest Magician made a Magic with the right hand (тогда Старейший Волшебник сотворил Волшебство правой рукой), with all five fingers of his right hand (всеми пятью пальцами /своей/ правой руки), and lo and behold, Best Beloved (и вот смотрите и внимайте, Самые Любименькие), Pau Amma grew smaller and smaller and smaller (Пау Амма стал = начал становиться меньше, и меньше, и меньше), till at last there was only a little green crab (пока, наконец, не осталось лишь маленького зеленого крабика) swimming in the water alongside the canoe (плывущего в воде рядом с каноэ), crying in a very small voice (кричащего очень тонким голоском), ‘Give me the scissors (дайте мне ножницы)!’

Then the Eldest Magician made a Magic with the right hand, with all five fingers of his right hand, and lo and behold, Best Beloved, Pau Amma grew smaller and smaller and smaller, till at last there was only a little green crab swimming in the water alongside the canoe, crying in a very small voice, ‘Give me the scissors!’

And the girl-daughter picked him up on the palm of her little brown hand (и девочка-дочка подняла его на ладонь своей маленькой коричневой ручки), and sat him in the bottom of the canoe and gave him her scissors (и посадила его на дно каноэ, и дала ему свои ножнички), and he waved them in his little arms (и он замахал ими в своих маленьких ручках), and opened them and shut them and snapped them (и раскрыл их, и закрыл их, и защелкал ими), and said (и сказал), ‘I can eat nuts (я могу есть орехи). I can crack shells (я могу расщеплять раковины). I can dig holes (я могу копать норки). I can climb trees (я могу лазать по деревьям). I can breathe in the dry air (я могу вдыхать сухой воздух), and I can find a safe Pusat Tasek under every stone (и я могу найти безопасный Пусат Тасек под каждым камнем).
