Существует большой объем литературы по психологическим различиям между полами. Ее содержание колеблется от анекдотичных высказываний и спекулятивных дискуссий до результатов тщательно разработанных экспериментов и выполнения стандартизированных тестов. Даже исследований, дающих объективные данные из крупных, репрезентативных выборок, слишком много, чтобы охватить их все в пределах одной главы. Возможно лишь представление общих тенденций с показательными исследованиями. В качестве анонса можно заявить, что некоторые психологические черты, включая склонности и личностные характеристики, значительно различаются в средних показателях между полами. Вместе с тем в пределах каждого пола можно наблюдать достаточно большие индивидуальные различия и проистекающее обширное совпадение между распределениями. Кроме того, основную массу имеющихся данных по половым различиям необходимо рассматривать в исключительно описательном смысле. Нам достаточно известно о расхождениях в поведении мужчин и женщин в определенной культуре в определенный временной период. Однако существует все еще очень мало знаний, касающихся происхождения этих различий. Тем не менее поступающая из множества источников информация начинает составлять картину действия биологических и культурных факторов в развитии поведенческих различий между мужчинами и женщинами.
