Советские археологи обычно отделяют начальный период сосуществования медных и каменных орудий (энеолит) от бронзового века, когда человек научился создавать сплавы меди и олова. Применительно к культурам эпохи металла Индостана, где четкое разделение на медный и бронзовый века пока не прослеживается, мы пользуемся термином «энеолит». Индийские ученые часто употребляют термин «халколит», не делая четких различий между поздним неолитом и эпохой меди, с одной стороны, и бронзовым веком — с другой.
