По сообщениям Lib'eration (1 марта 1994) и «Guardian» (8 марта 1994), во Франции против Льюиса выдвинуто одновременно уголовное и гражданское обвинение со стороны представителей армянской диаспоры и правозащитной организации. Его обвиняют по тем же статьям закона, которые объявляют во Франции преступлением отрицание существования нацистского холокоста. А именно, его обвиняют (согласно сообщениям французских газет) в отрицании существования геноцида армян в Оттоманской империи.
