Лерой Гордон «Гордо» Купер-младший — авиационный инженер и лётчик ВВС, ставший одним из семи первых астронавтов проекта «Меркурий» — первой пилотируемой космической программы США. В 1963 году он пилотировал заключительный полёт по программе «Меркурий» и стал последним американцем, совершившим полностью автономный орбитальный полёт. Два года спустя Купер выступил командиром корабля «Джемини-5» в ходе восьмисуточной экспедиции вместе с астронавтом Питом Конрадом. В 1970 году, налетав в космосе 222 часа, он вышел в отставку из НАСА и ВВС в звании полковника.

После ухода из НАСА Купер вошёл в советы директоров ряда компаний и работал техническим консультантом в таких областях, как проектирование и строительство высокоскоростных судов и энергетика. Он также сотрудничал с компанией Walt Disney в должности вице-президента по научно-исследовательским разработкам для Epcot. Среди его увлечений — глубоководные поиски и проектирование летательных аппаратов, вдохновлённых НЛО, которые он наблюдал и изучал на протяжении своей карьеры лётчика и астронавта.
