Британское правительство пыталось оттянуть Советский Союз от нацистской Германии, но преуспело только в том, что смогло держать его в состоянии «игры». Советское руководство было гораздо меньше британского заинтересовано в сближении — а может, и вовсе не заинтересовано, — помня о том, какое опасное влияние это могло оказать на его отношения с Германией, но тоже хотело поддержать британцев в состоянии «игры». Но, как и британцы, только в этом и преуспело. Тем дело и кончилось. Пока в конце концов неукротимое стремление нацистов к завоеваниям не толкнуло Британию и Советский Союз к тому самому сближению, которого они не захотели или не смогли достичь по собственной воле.
