They are trying to reach some goal far away on the horizon, and in the heat of the going they get so breathless and panting that they lose all sight of the beautiful, tranquil country they are passing through; and then the first thing they know, they are old and worn out, and it doesn't make any difference whether they've reached the goal or not. I've decided to sit down by the way and pile up a lot of little happinesses, even if I never become a Great Author. Did you ever know such a philosopheress as I am developing into?

Dear Comrade, Hooray (дорогой товарищ, ура)!

I'm a Fabian (я — фабианка).

That's a Socialist who's willing to wait (это социалисты, которые готовы ждать). We don't want the social revolution to come tomorrow morning (мы не хотим, чтобы социальная революция произошла завтра утром); it would be too upsetting (это /привело/ было бы к слишком большому беспорядку; to upset — опрокидывать; расстраивать, нарушать /порядок/). We want it to come very gradually in the distant future (мы хотим, чтобы она произошла очень постепенно, в отдаленном будущем), when we shall all be prepared (когда мы все будем подготовленными) and able to sustain the shock (и сможем выдержать потрясение; to sustain — подпирать, поддерживать; выдерживать, стойко переносить).

In the meantime (тем временем), we must be getting ready (мы должны готовиться), by instituting industrial (путем введения промышленных), educational (образовательных) and orphan asylum reforms (и приютских реформ).

Don't be insulted because this is so short (не обижайтесь, из-за того, что оно = письмо такое короткое). It isn't a letter (это не письмо); it's just a LINE (это всего несколько слов; line — линия; короткая записка) to say that I'm going to write a letter pretty soon (чтобы сказать, что я собираюсь написать письмо довольно скоро) when examinations are over (когда закончатся экзамены). It is not only necessary that I pass (не только необходимо чтобы я сдала их), but pass WELL (но сдала хорошо). I have a scholarship to live up to (у меня есть стипендия, которой я должна быть достойна).

Dear Daddy-Long-Legs,

President Cuyler made a speech this evening (ректор Кайлер произнес речь сегодня вечером; president — председатель; ректор /университетского колледжа/) about the modern generation (о том, что современное поколение) being flippant and superficial (легкомысленное и поверхностное). He says that we are losing the old ideals (он говорит, что мы теряем старые идеалы) of earnest endeavour (серьезных стремлений) and true scholarship (и истинной учености); and particularly is this falling-off noticeable (и особенно этот упадок заметен) in our disrespectful attitude towards organized authority (в нашем неуважительном отношении к существующим властям; to organize — организовывать, устраивать; authority — власть; власти, начальство, администрация). We no longer pay a seemly deference to our superiors (мы больше не оказываем подобающего уважения /по отношению/ к нашим властям; superior — начальник, старший).

I have never listened (я никогда не слышала) to a more illuminating exposition of the subject (более разъясняющего пояснения на эту тему; exposition — толкование, объяснение; описание, изложение).
