'Truly,' answered the Woodcutter, 'it was even as thou sayest.' And he took the cloak and the amber chain from the chest where they lay, and showed them to her.

And when she saw them she wept for joy, and said, 'He is my little son whom I lost in the forest. I pray thee send for him quickly, for in search of him have I wandered over the whole world.'

So the Woodcutter and his wife went out (тогда Дровосек и его жена вышли из дома) and called to the Star-Child (и позвали Звездного Мальчика), and said to him, 'Go into the house (иди в дом), and there shalt thou find thy mother (и там ты найдешь свою мать; shalt thou = shall you), who is waiting for thee (которая ждет тебя; thee = you).'

So he ran in (тогда он вбежал в дом; to run (ran, run)), filled with wonder (переполненный изумлением) and great gladness (и великой радостью). But when he saw her (но когда он увидел ту женщину: «ее») who was waiting there (которая ждала там), he laughed scornfully (он презрительно засмеялся; scorn — презрение, пренебрежение) and said, 'Why, where is my mother (ба, а где же моя мать)? For I see none here (а то я не вижу здесь никого) but this vile beggar-woman (только эту отвратительную попрошайку; vile — подлый; отталкивающий, мерзкий).'

And the woman answered him (и женщина ответила ему), 'I am thy mother (я твоя мать).'

So the Woodcutter and his wife went out and called to the Star-Child, and said to him, 'Go into the house, and there shalt thou find thy mother, who is waiting for thee.'

So he ran in, filled with wonder and great gladness. But when he saw her who was waiting there, he laughed scornfully and said, 'Why, where is my mother? For I see none here but this vile beggar-woman.'

And the woman answered him, 'I am thy mother.'

'Thou art mad to say so (ты сумасшедшая, раз так говоришь),' cried the Star-Child angrily (воскликнул сердито Звездный Мальчик). 'I am no son of thine (я не твой сын), for thou art a beggar (потому что ты попрошайка), and ugly (и уродлива), and in rags (и вся в лохмотьях). Therefore get thee hence (поэтому убирайся отсюда), and let me see thy foul face no more (и чтобы я твоего грязного/отвратительного лица больше не видел).'

'Nay, but thou art indeed my little son (нет, ты действительно мой маленький сын), whom I bare in the forest (которого я родила в лесу; to bear (bore, арх. bare; born) — нести что-либо; рождать, производить на свет),' she cried (заплакала она), and she fell on her knees (и упала на колени), and held out her arms to him (и протянула к нему руки; to hold (held) out — протягивать). 'The robbers stole thee from me (разбойники/грабители украли тебя у меня; to steal (stole, stolen) — воровать, красть), and left thee to die (и оставили тебя умирать),' she murmured (прошептала она), 'but I recognised thee (но я узнала тебя) when I saw thee (когда я увидела тебя), and the signs also have I recognized (и также я узнала и знаки), the cloak of golden tissue (плащ из золотистой парчи) and the amber chain (и цепочку из янтаря). Therefore I pray thee come with me (поэтому я умоляю тебя пойти со мной), for over the whole world have I wandered (потому что я прошла по всему миру) in search of thee (в поисках тебя). Come with me, my son (пойдем со мной, сын мой), for I have need of thy love (ведь я нуждаюсь в твоей любви).'

'Nay, but thou art indeed my little son, whom I bare in the forest,' she cried, and she fell on her knees, and held out her arms to him. 'The robbers stole thee from me, and left thee to die,' she murmured, 'but I recognised thee when I saw thee, and the signs also have I recognised, the cloak of golden tissue and the amber chain. Therefore I pray thee come with me, for over the whole world have I wandered in search of thee. Come with me, my son, for I have need of thy love.'

But the Star-Child stirred not from his place (но Звездный Мальчик не двинулся со своего места), but shut the doors of his heart against her (но закрыл перед ней двери своего сердца; to shut (shut) — затворять, закрывать), nor was there any sound heard (и не было слышно ни одного звука; to hear (heard)) save the sound of the woman (за исключением рыданий: «звуков» женщины) weeping for pain (плакавшей от боли).

And at last he spoke to her (и наконец он заговорил с ней; to speak (spoke, spoken)), and his voice was hard and bitter (и голос его был жестким и резким). 'If in very truth thou art my mother (если поистине ты моя мать; truth — правда, истина),' he said, 'it had been better hadst thou stayed away (то было бы лучше, если бы ты не приходила вовсе: «оставалась/пребывала прочь»; hadst thou = had you), and not come here to bring me to shame (а не приходила сюда, чтобы опозорить меня; to bring shame — опозорить, shame — стыд, позор), seeing that I thought (поскольку я думал; to think (thought)) I was the child of some Star (что я сын некоей Звезды), and not a beggar's child (а не ребенок нищенки), as thou tellest me that I am (как ты мне это говоришь, что я твой сын: «что я есть /сын нищенки/»; thou tallest = you tell). Therefore get thee hence (поэтому убирайся ты прочь; thee = you), and let me see thee no more (и чтобы я больше тебя не видел).'

But the Star-Child stirred not from his place, but shut the doors of his heart against her, nor was there any sound heard save the sound of the woman weeping for pain.

And at last he spoke to her, and his voice was hard and bitter. 'If in very truth thou art my mother,' he said, 'it had been better hadst thou stayed away, and not come here to bring me to shame, seeing that I thought I was the child of some Star, and not a beggar's child, as thou tellest me that I am. Therefore get thee hence, and let me see thee no more.'

'Alas! my son (увы, сын мой),' she cried, 'wilt thou not kiss me (не поцелуешь ли ты меня; wilt thou = will you) before I go (перед тем, как я уйду)? For I have suffered much (я ведь так настрадалась; to suffer — страдать, испытывать) to find thee (чтобы найти тебя).'

'Nay (нет),' said the Star-Child, 'but thou art too foul to look at (на тебя слишком противно смотреть; thou art = you are, foul — грязный; отвратительный, мерзкий), and rather would I kiss the adder (и я бы лучше/охотнее поцеловал ядовитую змею) or the toad than thee (или жабу, чем тебя).'

'Alas! my son,' she cried, 'wilt thou not kiss me before I go? For I have suffered much to find thee.'

'Nay,' said the Star-Child, 'but thou art too foul to look at, and rather would I kiss the adder or the toad than thee.'

So the woman rose up (тогда женщина поднялась; to rise (rose, risen)), and went away into the forest (и ушла в лес; to go (went, gone)) weeping bitterly (горько плача), and when the Star-Child saw that she had gone (и когда Звездный Мальчик увидел, что она ушла), he was glad (он обрадовался; glad — довольный, радостный), and ran back to his playmates (и побежал /назад/ к своим приятелям /по играм/) that he might play with them (чтобы поиграть с ними).

But when they beheld him coming (но когда они увидели, что он идет; to behold (beheld) — смотреть, созерцать), they mocked him and said (они стали насмехаться над ним и говорить), 'Why, thou art as foul as the toad (да ты же такой же отвратительный, как жаба), and as loathsome as the adder (и такой же противный как гадюка; to loathe — испытывать отвращение, ненавидеть). Get thee hence (убирайся отсюда), for we will not suffer thee (мы не позволим тебе; to suffer — страдать, книжн. позволять, дозволять) to play with us (играть с нами),' and they drove him out of the garden (и они выгнали его из сада; to drive (drove, driven) — водить, вести; гнать).
