And the Star-Child frowned and said to himself (и Звездный Мальчик нахмурился и сказал про себя), 'What is this that they say to me (о чем это они говорят мне)? I will go to the well of water (пойду-ка я к колодцу с водой) and look into it (и посмотрюсь в него), and it shall tell me of my beauty (и он скажет мне о моей красоте).'

So the woman rose up, and went away into the forest weeping bitterly, and when the Star-Child saw that she had gone, he was glad, and ran back to his playmates that he might play with them.

But when they beheld him coming, they mocked him and said, 'Why, thou art as foul as the toad, and as loathsome as the adder. Get thee hence, for we will not suffer thee to play with us,' and they drave him out of the garden.

And the Star-Child frowned and said to himself, 'What is this that they say to me? I will go to the well of water and look into it, and it shall tell me of my beauty.'

So he went to the well of water (тогда он отправился к колодцу /с водой/; to go (went, gone)) and looked into it (и посмотрел в него), and lo (и, подумать только)! his face was as the face of a toad (его лицо было как морда: «лицо» жабы), and his body was scaled like an adder (и его тело было покрыто чешуей, как у змеи; scale — чешуйка, чешуя). And he flung himself down on the grass (и он бросился на траву; to fling (flung) — метать, швырять, бросаться) and wept (и заплакал; to weep (wept)), and said to himself (и сказал сам себе), 'Surely this has come upon me (несомненно, это обрушилось на меня; to come upon — натолкнуться; свалиться, обрушиться) by reason of my sin (из-за моего греха; reason — причина, основание). For I have denied my mother (ибо я отказался/отрекся от моей матери; to deny — отрицать, отказывать; отрекаться), and driven her away (и прогнал ее; to drive (drove, driven)), and been proud (и был горд), and cruel to her (и жесток /по отношению/ к ней). Wherefore I will go (поэтому я отправлюсь) and seek her through the whole world (и буду искать ее по всему миру; to seek — искать, разыскивать), nor will I rest (и не буду я знать покоя; to rest — отдыхать, покоиться) till I have found her (до тех пор, пока я не найду ее; to find (found)).'

So he went to the well of water and looked into it, and lo! his face was as the face of a toad, and his body was scaled like an adder. And he flung himself down on the grass and wept, and said to himself, 'Surely this has come upon me by reason of my sin. For I have denied my mother, and driven her away, and been proud, and cruel to her. Wherefore I will go and seek her through the whole world, nor will I rest till I have found her.'

And there came to him (и подошла к нему; to come (came, come)) the little daughter of the Woodcutter (младшая дочь Дровосека), and she put her hand upon his shoulder (и она положила свою руку ему на плечо) and said, 'What doth it matter (какое это имеет значение; to matter — иметь значение, doth = does) if thou hast lost thy comeliness (если ты потерял свою привлекательную внешность; thou hast lost thy = you have lost your; comely — миловидный, привлекательный)? Stay with us (оставайся с нами), and I will not mock at thee (и я не буду насмехаться/издеваться над тобой).'

And he said to her (и он сказал ей), 'Nay, but I have been cruel to my mother (нет, я был жесток к своей матери), and as a punishment (и в качестве наказания; to punish — наказывать, карать) has this evil been sent to me (мне было послано это бедствие). Wherefore I must go hence (поэтому я должен уйти отсюда), and wander through the world (и бродить по свету) till I find her (до тех самых пор, пока я не найду ее), and she give me her forgiveness (и она простит меня: «даст мне свое прощение»).'

And there came to him the little daughter of the Woodcutter, and she put her hand upon his shoulder and said, 'What doth it matter if thou hast lost thy comeliness? Stay with us, and I will not mock at thee.'

And he said to her, 'Nay, but I have been cruel to my mother, and as a punishment has this evil been sent to me. Wherefore I must go hence, and wander through the world till I find her, and she give me her forgiveness.'

So he ran away into the forest (и вот он убежал в лес) and called out to his mother (и звал свою мать) to come to him (прийти к нему), but there was no answer (но ответа не было). All day long (целый день) he called to her (он звал ее), and, when the sun set (и, когда солнце село; to set (set) — ставить; садиться, заходить /о небесных светилах/) he lay down to sleep (он улегся спать) on a bed of leaves (на постель из листьев), and the birds and the animals fled from him (а птицы и звери спасались от него бегством; to flee (fled) — бежать, убегать), for they remembered his cruelty (потому как они помнили о его жестокости), and he was alone (и он был совсем один) save for the toad (за исключением жабы) that watched him (которая наблюдала за ним), and the slow adder that crawled past (и змеи, которая медленно ползла позади него: «и медленной змеи»; to crawl — ползать).

So he ran away into the forest and called out to his mother to come to him, but there was no answer. All day long he called to her, and, when the sun set he lay down to sleep on a bed of leaves, and the birds and the animals fled from him, for they remembered his cruelty, and he was alone save for the toad that watched him, and the slow adder that crawled past.

And in the morning he rose up (и утром он поднялся), and plucked some bitter berries (и сорвал несколько горьких ягод; to pluck — срывать, собирать) from the trees (с деревьев) and ate them (и съел их; to eat (ate, eaten) — есть, питаться), and took his way through the great wood (и пошел своей дорогой по дремучему лесу), weeping sorely (горестно плача; sore — болезненный; тяжкий, полный горя). And of everything that he met (и у всякого, кого он встречал; to meet (met)) he made inquiry (он спрашивал; inquiry — вопрос, запрос, to make inquiries — наводить справки) if perchance they had seen his mother (не видели ли они случайно его матери: «если, может быть, они видели его мать»).

And in the morning he rose up, and plucked some bitter berries from the trees and ate them, and took his way through the great wood, weeping sorely. And of everything that he met he made inquiry if perchance they had seen his mother.

He said to the Mole (он сказал Кроту), 'Thou canst go beneath the earth (ты можешь двигаться/ходить под землей; thou canst = you can). Tell me, is my mother there (скажи мне, нет ли там моей матери: «там ли моя мать»)?'

And the Mole answered (и Крот ответил), 'Thou hast blinded mine eyes (ты ослепил мои глаза = лишил меня зрения; thou hast = you have). How should I know (откуда мне знать)?'

He said to the Mole, 'Thou canst go beneath the earth. Tell me, is my mother there?'

And the Mole answered, 'Thou hast blinded mine eyes. How should I know?'

He said to the Linnet (он спросил у Коноплянки), 'Thou canst fly over the tops of the tall trees (ты можешь летать над верхушками самых высоких деревьев), and canst see the whole world (и ты можешь видеть весь мир). Tell me, canst thou see my mother (скажи мне, можешь ли ты видеть мою мать)?'

And the Linnet answered (и Коноплянка ответила), 'Thou hast clipt my wings (ты подрезал мои крылья; thou hast clipt = you have clipped, to clip — стричь, подрезать) for thy pleasure (для своего удовольствия). How should I fly (как я могу /теперь/ летать)?'

He said to the Linnet, 'Thou canst fly over the tops of the tall trees, and canst see the whole world. Tell me, canst thou see my mother?'
