Можно поэтому предположить, что появление ПТСР-симптоматики отчасти объясняется активацией ненадежных типов привязанности при нарушении функционирования «надежной» рабочей модели у травмированного индивида. Ответ на вопрос, почему это имеет место лишь у определенной части пострадавших, очевидно, может быть таким: те индивиды, у которых надежная рабочая модель по сравнению с другими доступными им типами привязанности является относительно слабо развитой, испытывают после травмы значительно большие трудности при ее восстановлении и достигают значительно меньшего успеха, так что у них оказываются активированными модели ненадежной привязанности. Другой вариант: рабочая модель индивида в целом отличается низкой пластичностью, в результате чего она с трудом поддается пересмотру и изменению; поэтому когда надежная рабочая модель вследствие травмы нарушается и не соответствует больше реальному опыту индивида, вступают в действие другие типы привязанности – ненадежные, порождая дезадаптивные способы поведения и посттравматическую симптоматику.

В проведенном исследовании изучалось проявление у испытуемых различных прототипов привязанности, а также степень выраженности психопатологической (в том числе посттравматической) симптоматики. С помощью корреляционного анализа было показано, что надежный тип привязанности не имеет корреляций с психопатологией, в то время как прототипы, относящиеся к ненадежным (тревожному и дистанцированному) типам имеют значимые взаимосвязи с выраженностью психопатологических (в том числе посттравматических) симптомов (Калмыкова и др., 2002). Таким образом, результаты исследования подтверждают гипотезу о взаимосвязи качества привязанности индивида с его способностью противостоять стрессогенным и психотравмирующим событиям.
