Корпус работ Гэддиса может поверхностно напоминать творчество других писателей, но отражает собственную органическую форму. В 1987 году Джозеф Макэлрой сравнил его со сжимающейся вселенной: «большой взрыв» тысячестраничного дебюта и «медленная эволюция» в виде «Джей Ар», «а затем почти парадигма, или pensee» [286] , в «Плотницкой готике» [287] . Метафору следует расширить для двух последних романов — сверхновой «Его забавы» и коллапса в черную дыру «Агонии агапе», но лично я предпочитаю рассматривать пять романов как культурные лакмусовые бумажки, соответствующие стадиям взросления Гэддиса: юность и экспансивный идеализм в «Распознаваниях»; средний возраст и уклончивый идеализм под осадой в «Джей Ар»; конец среднего возраста и утрата идеализма в «Плотницкой готике»; последняя забава старости в его четвертой крупной работе; откровения на одре в посмертном романе. Хотя во всех книгах (кроме последней) полно персонажей самого разного возраста, мужчинам возраста Гэддиса, в котором он писал данный роман, в основном свойственны моральная точка зрения и все более мрачное и пессимистичное мировоззрение. Так или иначе, его творчество демонстрирует естественное и элегантное развитие, мастерское в своей лингвистической виртуозности и безжалостное в разговоре о важных темах западной цивилизации.
