Did you ever hear of Michael Angelo (вы когда-нибудь слышали о Микеланджело)?

He was a famous artist (он был знаменитым живописцем; fame — слава) who lived in Italy in the Middle Ages (который жил в Италии в средние века). Everybody in English Literature seemed to know about him (все на занятиях английской литературы, кажется, знают о нем), and the whole class laughed (и вся группа смеялась; class — класс, разряд; класс /в школе/, группа /в колледже/) because I thought he was an archangel (оттого что я подумала, что это был архангел). He sounds like an archangel, doesn't he? The trouble with college is that you are expected to know such a lot of things you've never learned. It's very embarrassing at times.

But now, when the girls talk about things that I never heard of (но теперь, когда девушки говорят о вещах, о которых я никогда не слышала), I just keep still and look them up in the encyclopedia (я помалкиваю и отыскиваю их в энциклопедии; to keep still — вести себя тихо; молчать; не шевелиться; to look up — искать /в словаре, справочнике/).

I made an awful mistake the first day (я совершила ужасную ошибку в первый же день). Somebody mentioned Maurice Maeterlinck (кто-то упомянул Мориса Метерлинка), and I asked if she was a Freshman (а я спросила, она, что, первокурсница). That joke has gone all over college (это шутка облетела: «обошла» весь колледж). But anyway, I'm just as bright in class as any of the others (но, в любом случае, я такая же смышленая в нашей группе, как и все остальные; bright — яркий, блестящий; способный, сообразительный) — and brighter than some of them (и даже смышленее, чем некоторые из них)!

I stand the chair over the spot (я поставила кресло прямо поверх этого пятна).

The windows are up high (окна расположены очень высоко); you can't look out from an ordinary seat (и с обычного кресла нельзя выглянуть наружу; seat — место /для сидения/).

Sallie McBride helped me choose the things at the Senior auction (Салли Макбрайд помогла выбрать мне /все эти/ вещи на распродаже старшекурсниц; auction — аукцион, торги). She has lived in a house all her life (она всю свою жизнь прожила в /собственном/ доме) and knows about furnishing (и знает о меблировке).

It's queer what a mixture the registrar can make (даже странно, какую смесь может устроить секретарь учебной части) in the matter of room-mates (в вопросе /подбора/ товарищей по комнате). Sallie thinks everything is funny (Салли думает, что все забавно) — even flunking (даже провалиться на экзамене; to flunk — завалить /предмет на экзамене/; провалиться /на экзамене, выступлении и т.п./) — and Julia is bored at everything (а у Джулии все вызывает скуку; bored — скучающий).
