I accompanied Sola and Dejah Thoris in a search for new quarters, which we found in a building nearer the audience chamber and of far more pretentious architecture than our former habitation. We also found in this building real sleeping apartments with ancient beds of highly wrought metal swinging from enormous gold chains depending from the marble ceilings. The decoration of the walls was most elaborate, and, unlike the frescoes in the other buildings I had examined, portrayed many human figures in the compositions. These were of people like myself, and of a much lighter color than Dejah Thoris. They were clad in graceful, flowing robes, highly ornamented with metal and jewels, and their luxuriant hair was of a beautiful golden and reddish bronze. The men were beardless and only a few wore arms. The scenes depicted, for the most part, a fair-skinned, fair-haired people at play.

Dejah Thoris clasped her hands with an exclamation of rapture (Дежа Торис молитвенно сложила руки с восклицанием восхищения; to clasp — сжимать; to clasp hands — складывать руки в мольбе; rapture — восторг, экстаз) as she gazed upon these magnificent works of art (пока она смотрела на эти великолепные произведения искусства), wrought by a people long extinct (созданные давно исчезнувшим народом); while Sola, on the other hand, apparently did not see them (в то время, как Сола, с другой стороны, их явно не замечала).

We decided to use this room (мы решили использовать эту комнату), on the second floor and overlooking the plaza (которая была на втором этаже и выходила на площадь), for Dejah Thoris and Sola, and another room adjoining and in the rear for the cooking and supplies (а вторую комнату, примыкающую к ней сзади — для готовки и припасов). "In the name of my first ancestor (во имя моего первого предка), then," she continued, "where may you be from (откуда ты можешь происходить)? Her eyes were filled with a strange, weird light (ее глаза наполнились странным, таинственным светом); her voice was pleading (голос ее был молящим), and her little hands, reached up upon my breast (а ее маленькие ручки, протянутые к моей груди), were pressed against me as though to wring a denial from my very heart (прижались ко мне, как будто /стараясь/ исторгнуть отрицание прямо из моего сердца; to wring — выжимать, исторгать).
