The first of these was M. Andr'e Fauvel, the young chief auditor. He was well set up and handsome in a blond way, in spite of a scar upon his cheek honorably acquired and the source of a military medal won during his army service in Algeria.

Every important bachelor in Paris, not to mention a considerable quota of married men, were paying her court.

M. Her origin was a simple bourgeois family in Lyon and she was desperately weary of the life her profession forced her to lead, the endless rounds of cocktail parties, dinners, theaters and cabarets, as companion to film men, automobile men, steel men, titled men, all of whom wished to be seen with the most glamorous and photographed model in the city. Mlle. Petitpierre wanted nothing of any of them.
