`Of a truth thou should'st have been with me. The wine-sellers elbow their way through the crowd with great black skins on their shoulders. Most of them sell the wine of Schiraz, which is as sweet as honey. They serve it in little metal cups and strew rose leaves upon it.

Thou canst not think how strange a people they are (ты и представить себе не можешь, какие странные эти люди; thou canst = you can; to think — думать; представлять себе, воображать). When they are glad (когда они счастливы/рады) they go to the bird-sellers (они идут к торговцам птицами) and buy of them a caged bird (и покупают у них птицу в клетке; cage — клетка, caged — запертый, содержащийся в клетке), and set it free (и отпускают ее на волю; free — свободный, вольный) that their joy may be greater (чтобы их радость была еще больше), and when they are sad (а когда они печальны) they scourge themselves (они бичуют себя) with thorns (терновником: «колючими растениями») that their sorrow (чтобы их печаль) may not grow less (не стала меньше = не уменьшилась; to grow (grew, grown) — расти; становиться, делаться).

`At last they stopped (наконец они остановились) at a square white house (у прямоугольного/квадратного белого дома). There were no windows to it (в нем не было окон), only a little door (только маленькая дверь) like the door of a tomb (похожая на дверь гробницы; tomb — могила; гробница, склеп). `At last they stopped at a square white house. There were no windows to it, only a little door like the door of a tomb. They set down the palanquin and knocked three times with a copper hammer. An Armenian in a caftan of green leather peered through the wicket, and when he saw them he opened, and spread a carpet on the ground, and the woman stepped out. As she went in, she turned round and smiled at me again. I had never seen anyone so pale.

`When the moon rose (когда взошла луна; to rise (rose, risen)) I returned to the same place (я вернулась на тоже самое место) and sought for the house (и стала искать тот дом; to seek (sought)), but it was no longer there (но его там больше не было). When I saw that (когда я увидел это; to see (saw, seen)), I knew who the woman was (я осознала/поняла, кто была та женщина; to know (knew, known) — знать; осознавать), and wherefore she had smiled at me (и почему она тогда улыбнулась мне).

On the feast of the New Moon (на празднике Новолуния; feast — пир, банкет; праздник /религиозный/) the young Emperor came forth from his palace (из своего дворца вышел молодой Император) and went into the mosque to pray (и пошел в мечеть помолиться). His hair and beard were dyed with rose-leaves (его волосы и борода были окрашены розовыми лепестками), and his cheeks were powdered (и его щеки были напудрены) with a fine gold dust (мелкой золотой пылью). The palms of his feet and hands (его ступни и ладони: «ладони его ног и рук») were yellow with saffron (были желтыми от шафрана).

`When the moon rose I returned to the same place and sought for the house, but it was no longer there. When I saw that, I knew who the woman was, and wherefore she had smiled at me.

`Certainly thou should'st have been with me. On the feast of the New Moon the young Emperor came forth from his palace and went into the mosque to pray. His hair and beard were dyed with rose-leaves, and his cheeks were powdered with a fine gold dust. The palms of his feet and hands were yellow with saffron.

`At sunrise he went forth from his palace (на восходе солнца он вышел из своего дворца) in a robe of silver (в серебряных одеяниях), and at sunset he returned to it again (и на закате солнца он снова вернулся туда) in a robe of gold (в золотых одеяниях). When the Emperor saw me (когда Император увидел меня; to see (saw, seen)), he raised his painted eyebrows (он поднял свои накрашенные брови) and stopped (и остановился). I stood quite still (я стояла совершенно спокойно), and made him no obeisance (и не кланялась ему почтительно; obeisance — почтительный поклон; почтение, уважение). The people marvelled at my boldness (люди удивлялись/изумлялись моей храбрости/дерзости; bold — храбрый; дерзкий, наглый), and counselled me (и советовали мне) to flee from the city (бежать из города).
