`In front of the temple was a pool of clear water paved with veined onyx. I lay down beside it, and with my pale fingers I touched the broad leaves. One of the priests came towards me and stood behind me. He had sandals on his feet, one of soft serpent-skin and the other of birds' plumage. On his head was a mitre of black felt decorated with silver crescents. Seven yellows were woven into his robe, and his frizzed hair was stained with antimony.

`After a little while (вскоре: «через некоторое время») he spake to me (он заговорил со мной; to speak (spoke, арх.spake; spoken), and asked me my desire (и спросил у меня, чего я желаю = что мне угодно). `I told him (я сказала ему) that my desire was to see the god (что я бы желала: «что моим желанием было» взглянуть на божество/бога).

"`The god is hunting (бог охотится)," said the priest, looking strangely at me (странно глядя на меня) with his small slanting eyes (своими небольшими раскосыми глазами; slant — косо, наклонно, slant-eyed — с косым разрезом глаз, раскосый).

"`Tell me in what forest (скажи мне, в каком лесу /он охотится/), and I will ride with him (и я поскачу /на охоту/ вместе с ним)," I answered (ответила я).

`After a little while he spake to me, and asked me my desire. `I told him that my desire was to see the god.

"`The god is hunting," said the priest, looking strangely at me with his small slanting eyes.

"`Tell me in what forest, and I will ride with him," I answered.

`He combed out the soft fringes of his tunic (он расправил: «причесал» мягкую бахрому на своей тунике; to comb — чесать, расчесывать) with his long pointed nails (своими длинными, острыми ногтями; point — точка; кончик, острие, pointed — остроконечный; острый, заостренный). "The god is asleep (бог спит)," he murmured (сказал он тихо).

"`Tell me on what couch (скажи мне, на каком ложе: «кушетке/диване»), and I will watch by him (и я буду дежурить у его /постели/; to watch — наблюдать; стеречь, охранять)," I answered (ответила я).

"`The god is at the feast (божество на пиру = пирует)," he cried (вскричал он).

"`If the wine be sweet (если вино сладкое) I will drink it with him (я выпью его с ним), and if it be bitter (и если оно горькое) I will drink it with him also (я тоже выпью его с ним)," was my answer (был мой ответ).

`He combed out the soft fringes of his tunic with his long pointed nails. "The god is asleep," he murmured.

"`Tell me on what couch, and I will watch by him," I answered.

"`The god is at the feast," he cried.

"`If the wine be sweet I will drink it with him, and if it be bitter I will drink it with him also," was my answer.

`He bowed his head in wonder (он склонил свою голову в удивлении/изумлении; to bow — кланяться), and, taking me by the hand (и, взяв меня за руку), he raised me up (он поднял меня /на ноги/), and led me into the temple (и повел меня в храм; to lead (led)).

`And in the first chamber (и в первом зале; chamber — комната, апартамент; зал, палата) I saw an idol (я увидел идола/божество) seated on a throne of jasper (сидящего на троне из яшмы) bordered with great orient pearls (окаймленном крупными жемчужинами высшего качества; to border — граничить; окаймлять; orient — восточный; высшего качества /о жемчуге/). It was carved out of ebony (он /идол/ был вырезан из черного дерева), and in stature was of the stature of a man (и рост его был /равен/ росту мужчины/человека; stature — стан, телосложение; рост). On its forehead was a ruby (на его лбу был рубин), and thick oil dripped from its hair (и густое масло стекало каплями с его волос; thick —толстый; густой; to drip — капать, стекать) on to its thighs (на его бедра). Its feet were red (ступни его были красными; foot (мн.ч. feet) — нога, ступня) with the blood of a newly-slain kid (от крови только что убитого козленка; newly — заново; недавно, только что; to slay (slew, slain)), and its loins girt with a copper belt (и чресла его были подпоясаны медным поясом; to gird (girded, girt) — подпоясывать, опоясывать) that was studded with seven beryls (который был украшен: «усеян» семи бериллами; to stud — овивать гвоздями; усеивать, усыпать).

"`Show me the god (покажи мне бога)," I cried (закричала я), "or I will surely slay thee (или я непременно убью тебя; thee = you)." And I touched his hand (и я прикоснулась к его руке), and it became withered (и она отсохла: «и она стала иссохшей»; to become (became, become)).

`And the priest besought me, saying (и жрец умолял меня, говоря; to beseech (besought)), "Let my lord heal his servant (пусть господин/повелитель излечит своего слугу), and I will show him the god (и я покажу ему бога)."

`And I said to the priest, "Is this the god?" And he answered me, "This is the god."

"`Show me the god," I cried, "or I will surely slay thee." And I touched his hand, and it became withered.

`And the priest besought me, saying, "Let my lord heal his servant, and I will show him the god."

`So I breathed with my breath upon his hand (тогда я дыхнула /своим дыханием/ на его руку), and it became whole again (и она снова стала невредимой; whole — целый, полный; невредимый), and he trembled (и он задрожал) and led me into the second chamber (и повел меня во второй зал), and I saw an idol (и я увидела идола) standing on a lotus of jade (стоящего на нефритовом лотосе) hung with great emeralds (увешанном огромными изумрудами; to hang (hung, hanged)). It was carved out of ivory (он /идол/ был вырезан из слоновой кости), and in stature was twice the stature of a man (и рост его был в два раза больше роста человека). On its forehead was a chrysolite (на его челе/лбу был хризолит), and its breasts were smeared with myrrh and cinnamon (и грудь его была натерта миррой и корицей; to smear — жирно смазывать, натирать). In one hand it held (в одной руке он держал; to hold (held)) a crooked sceptre of jade (изогнутый нефритовый скипетр), and in the other a round crystal (а в другой — сферический кристалл; round — круглый, шарообразный). It ware buskins of brass (на нем были надеты котурны из желтой меди/латуни; buskin — высокий ботинок на шнуровке, котурн), and its thick neck (и его толстая шея) was circled with a circle of selenites (была обвита ожерельем из селенитов: «окружено кругом из селенита»; to circle — двигаться по кругу; окружать).
