He crept back, and thrust the knife into his belt, and a feeling of awe came over him. `Get thee gone,' he murmured, `and let me see thy face no more.'

`Nay, but we must meet again,' said the Soul. Its voice was low and flute-like, and its lips hardly moved while it spake.

`How shall we meet?' cried the young Fisherman. `Thou wilt not follow me into the depths of the sea?'

`Once every year (один раз каждый код) I will come to this place (я буду приходить на это место), and call to thee (и буду звать тебя),' said the Soul. `It may be (может так случится) that thou wilt have need of me (что я тебе понадоблюсь: «ты будешь иметь нужду во мне»).'

`What need should I have of thee (зачем ты мне понадобишься: «какую нужду я буду иметь в тебе»)?' cried the young Fisherman, `but be it as thou wilt (но пусть будет так, как ты желаешь),' and he plunged into the water (и он нырнул в воду), and the Tritons blew their horns (и Тритоны затрубили в свои трубы; to blow (blew, blown); horn — рог; духовой музыкальный инструменты), and the little Mermaid rose up to meet him (и маленькая Русалочка поднялась ему навстречу; to rise (rose, risen)), and put her arms around his neck (и обвила его шею руками) and kissed him on the mouth (и поцеловала его в уста).

And the Soul stood on the lonely beach (а Душа стояла на пустынном: «одиноком» берегу) and watched them (и наблюдала за ними). And when they had sunk down into the sea (и, когда они опустились в море; to sink (sank, sunk) — тонуть; опускаться, падать), it went weeping away (она пошла, рыдая, прочь; to go (went, gone)) over the marshes (по болотам).

`Once every year I will come to this place, and call to thee,' said the Soul. `It may be that thou wilt have need of me.'

`What need should I have of thee?' cried the young Fisherman, `but be it as thou wilt,' and he plunged into the water, and the Tritons blew their horns, and the little Mermaid rose up to meet him, and put her arms around his neck and kissed him on the mouth.

And the Soul stood on the lonely beach and watched them. And when they had sunk down into the sea, it went weeping away over the marshes.

And after a year was over (год спустя; to be over — окончиться, завершиться) the Soul came down to the shore of the sea (Душа спустилась на берег моря) and called to the young Fisherman (и позвала молодого Рыбака), and he rose out of the deep (и тот поднялся из глубины /морской/; to rise (rose, risen)), and said, `Why dost thou call to me (почему ты позвала меня; dost thou = do you)?'

And the Soul answered (и Душа ответила), `Come nearer, that I may speak with thee (подойди поближе, чтобы я могла поговорить с тобой), for I have seen marvellous things (потому что я видела удивительные вещи).'

So he came nearer (он подошел = подвинулся поближе), and couched in the shallow water (и прилег на мелководье; shallow — мелкий, неглубокий), and leaned his head upon his hand (и упершись головой о руку; to lean — наклоняться; опираться) and listened (стал слушать).

And after a year was over the Soul came down to the shore of the sea and called to the young Fisherman, and he rose out of the deep, and said, `Why dost thou call to me?'

And the Soul answered, `Come nearer, that I may speak with thee, for I have seen marvellous things.'

So he came nearer, and couched in the shallow water, and leaned his head upon his hand and listened.

And the Soul said to him (и Душа сказала ему), `When I left thee (когда я оставила тебя; to leave (left)) I turned my face to the East (я повернулась лицом на Восток) and journeyed (и отправилась путешествовать). From the East cometh everything that is wise (с Востока приходит все мудрое). Six days I journeyed (я путешествовала шесть дней), and on the morning of the seventh day (и на утро седьмого дня) I came to a hill (я подошла к холму) that is in the country of the Tartars (что стоит в стране Татар). I sat down (я присела; to sit (sat)) under the shade of a tamarisk tree (в тени: «под тенью» /дерева/ тамариска) to shelter myself from the sun (чтобы укрыться от солнца; to shelter — приютить; укрыться, спрятаться). The land was dry (земля была сухой), and burnt up with the heat (и выжженной от жары; to burn (burnt, burned) — жечь; гореть, пылать). The people went to and fro over the plain (люди ходили туда и сюда по этой равнине) like flies (подобно мухам; fly — муха) crawling upon a disk of polished copper (ползающим по диску из полированной меди).

And the Soul said to him, `When I left thee I turned my face to the East and journeyed. From the East cometh everything that is wise. Six days I journeyed, and on the morning of the seventh day I came to a hill that is in the country of the Tartars. I sat down under the shade of a tamarisk tree to shelter myself from the sun. The land was dry, and burnt up with the heat. The people went to and fro over the plain like flies crawling upon a disk of polished copper.

`When it was noon (в полдень) a cloud of red dust (облачко красной пыли) rose up from the flat rim of the land (поднялось над ровным/плоским краем земли). When the Tartars saw it (когда Татары увидели его; to see (saw, seen)), they strung their painted bows (натянули свои раскрашенные/расписные луки; to string (strung) — снабжать тетивой; натягивать), and having leapt upon their little horses (и, вскочив на своих лошадей; to leap (leapt)) they galloped to meet it (они поскакали галопом ему навстречу). The women fled screaming to the waggons (женщины побежали, отчаянно крича, к повозкам; to flee (fled) — бежать, спасаться бегством), and hid themselves (и попрятались; to hide (hid, hidden)) behind the felt curtains (за фетровыми занавесями).

`At twilight the Tartars returned (в сумерках Татары вернулись), but five of them were missing (но пятерых /из них/ не было; to miss — промахнуться; недоставать, пропадать), and of those that came back (да и из тех, кто вернулся назад) not a few had been wounded (многие были ранены; few —немногие, мало кто). They harnessed their horses to the waggons (они впрягли своих лошадей в кибитки) and drove hastily away (и поспешно уехали; to drive (drove, driven)). Three jackals came out of a cave (три шакала вышли из пещеры) and peered after them (и смотрели им вслед). Then they sniffed up the air (затем они потянули: «понюхали» воздух; to sniff — сопеть; нюхать) with their nostrils (/своими/ ноздрями), and trotted off in the opposite direction (и потрусили в противоположном направлении; to trot — идти рысью, семенить).

`At twilight the Tartars returned, but five of them were missing, and of those that came back not a few had been wounded. They harnessed their horses to the waggons and drove hastily away. Three jackals came out of a cave and peered after them. Then they sniffed up the air with their nostrils, and trotted off in the opposite direction.

`When the moon rose (когда взошла луна) I saw a camp-fire burning on the plain (я увидел бивачный огонь, горящий на равнине; camp — лагерь; место привала), and went towards it (и пошел к нему). A company of merchants (группа купцов; company — общество, компания) were seated round it on carpets (сидела на коврах вокруг него). Their camels were picketed behind them (их верблюды были привязаны к колышкам позади них; to picket — огораживать; привязывать к колу), and the negroes who were their servants (и негры, которые были их слугами) were pitching tents of tanned skin (устанавливали шатры из дубленой кожи; to pitch — врывать, сооружать, устанавливать) upon the sand (на песке), and making a high wall (и сооружали высокую стену) of the prickly pear (из опунции /род кактуса/; prickly — с шипами, с колючками).
