Автор настоящей работы считает, что в общеисторическом контексте развития мезоамериканских цивилизаций более точно было бы использовать термин «древнеольмекская культура». Тем не менее в нашей книге мы широко используем и общепринятый термин «ольмекская».

Стефенс Джон Ллойд (1805–1852) — американский адвокат и путешественник. Вместе с английским художником Фредериком Казервудом в 1839–1842 гг. совершил ряд экспедиций на п-в Юкатан, где посетил заброшенные города майя.
