We were having lemon jelly for dessert (у нас было лимонное желе на десерт) when the question came up (когда этот вопрос возник; to come up — подходить; возникать, случаться). Supposing the swimming tank in the gymnasium were filled full of lemon jelly, could a person trying to swim manage to keep on top or would he sink?

We were having lemon jelly for dessert when the question came up. We discussed it heatedly for half an hour and it's still unsettled. Sallie thinks that she could swim in it, but I am perfectly sure that the best swimmer in the world would sink. Wouldn't it be funny to be drowned in lemon jelly?

1st. What shape are the rooms in an octagon house?

Some of the girls insist that they're square (некоторые девушки настаивают, что они квадратные); but I think they'd have to be shaped like a piece of pie (но мне кажется, что они должны иметь форму как кусок пирога). Don't you (а вы разве так не считаете)?

We beat the Freshmen at basket ball yesterday (вчера мы победили первокурсниц в баскетбол; to beat — бить, ударять; побить, победить). Of course we're pleased (конечно, мы довольны) — but oh, if we could only beat the Juniors (но если бы мы смогли только победить студенток предпоследнего = третьего курса)! I'd be willing to be black and blue all over (я бы хотела быть сплошь в синяках; black and blue — в синяках) and stay in bed a week in a witch-hazel compress (и оставаться в постели на целую неделю с компрессами из гамамелиса).

Sallie has invited me (Салли пригласила меня) to spend the Christmas vacation with her (провести у нее рождественские каникулы). She lives in Worcester, Massachusetts (она живет в Вустере, Массачусетс). Wasn't it nice of her (разве не мило с ее стороны)? I shall love to go (я с удовольствием поеду). Seventh hour — I must run to rehearsal (седьмой час — я должна бежать на репетицию). I'm to be in the Thanksgiving theatricals (я должна участвовать в постановке ко Дню благодарения; theatrical — профессиональный театр; спектакль, постановка).
