We have the jolliest times at the table (мы веселимся: «мы проводим самое веселое время» за столом) — everybody laughs and jokes and talks at once (все смеются, и шутят, и говорят все вместе), and we don't have to say grace beforehand (и нам не обязательно читать молитву перед /едой/; grace — грация, изящество; молитва /перед едой и после еды/; beforehand — заранее, заблаговременно). Just the sight of such a house makes you want to be a child all over again.

And as for families! I never dreamed they could be so nice. Sallie has a father and mother and grandmother, and the sweetest three-year-old baby sister all over curls, and a medium-sized brother who always forgets to wipe his feet, and a big, good-looking brother named Jimmie, who is a junior at Princeton.

Dear me, Daddy, but it was a funny sensation (Боже мой, Папочка, это было забавное/странное чувство)! I felt as benevolent as a Trustee of the John Grier home (я чувствовала себя такой же щедрой и великодушной, как попечитель Приюта Джона Грира). I kissed one sweet, sticky little boy (я поцеловала одного милого, липкого мальчугана; to stick — приклеивать; липнуть) — but I don't think I patted any of them on the head (но, мне кажется, что ни одного из них я не погладила по головке)!

We started to walk to town today (сегодня мы отправились прогуляться в город), but mercy (но милосердный Боже)! how it poured (как же лило-то). I like winter to be winter with snow instead of rain (мне нравится, когда зима — это зима, со снегом, а не с дождем).
