The Scarecrow sat in the big throne (Страшила сидел на большом троне) and the others stood respectfully before him (а остальные почтительно стояли перед ним).

"We are not so unlucky (мы не такие уж и неудачливые)," said the new ruler (сказал новый правитель), "for this Palace and the Emerald City belong to us (ведь этот Дворец и Изумрудный Город принадлежат нам), and we can do just as we please (и мы можем делать все, что захотим; to please — хотеть, желать, изволить; to do as one pleases — поступать так, как заблагорассудится).

When I remember that a short time ago I was up on a pole in a farmer's cornfield (когда я вспоминаю, что еще недавно: «короткое время тому назад» я торчал на палке на фермерском кукурузном поле), and that now I am the ruler of this beautiful City (а теперь я правитель этого прекрасного Города), I am quite satisfied with my lot (я вполне доволен своей долей; lot — лот, жребий; участь, доля, судьба)."

"I also (я тоже)," said the Tin Woodman, "am well-pleased with my new heart (очень доволен своим новым сердцем); and, really, that was the only thing I wished in all the world (и, в самом деле, это была единственная вещь в целом мире, которую я /действительно/ хотел /иметь/)."

"For my part, I am content in knowing (с моей стороны, я доволен тем, что знаю) I am as brave as any beast that ever lived (что я столь же храбр, как и любой другой зверь, который когда-либо жил), if not braver (если даже не храбрее)," said the Lion modestly (скромно сказал Лев).

"We are not so unlucky," said the new ruler, "for this Palace and the Emerald City belong to us, and we can do just as we please. When I remember that a short time ago I was up on a pole in a farmer's cornfield, and that now I am the ruler of this beautiful City, I am quite satisfied with my lot."

"I also," said the Tin Woodman, "am well-pleased with my new heart; and, really, that was the only thing I wished in all the world."

"For my part, I am content in knowing I am as brave as any beast that ever lived, if not braver," said the Lion modestly.

"If Dorothy would only be contented to live in the Emerald City (если бы только Дороти была довольна жизнью в Изумрудном Городе; contented — довольный, удовлетворенный)," continued the Scarecrow (продолжил Страшила), "we might all be happy together (мы могли бы быть счастливы все вместе)."

"But I don't want to live here (но я не хочу жить здесь)," cried Dorothy (заплакала Дороти). "I want to go to Kansas, and live with Aunt Em and Uncle Henry (я хочу поехать в Канзас и жить с Тетушкой Эм и Дядюшкой Генри)."

"Well, then, what can be done (ну, что ж тогда можно сделать: «что может быть сделано»)?" inquired the Woodman (осведомился Дровосек).

The Scarecrow decided to think (Страшила решил подумать), and he thought so hard (и думал он столь напряженно) that the pins and needles began to stick out of his brains (что булавки и иголки начали вылезать из его мозгов; to stick out — торчать наружу). Finally he said (наконец он сказал): "Why not call the Winged Monkeys (почему бы /нам/ не позвать Крылатых Обезьян), and ask them to carry you over the desert (и не попросить их перенести тебя через пустыню; to ask — спрашивать; просить)?"

"If Dorothy would only be contented to live in the Emerald City," continued the Scarecrow, "we might all be happy together."

"But I don't want to live here," cried Dorothy. "I want to go to Kansas, and live with Aunt Em and Uncle Henry."

"Well, then, what can be done?" inquired the Woodman.

The Scarecrow decided to think, and he thought so hard that the pins and needles began to stick out of his brains. Finally he said: "Why not call the Winged Monkeys, and ask them to carry you over the desert?"

"I never thought of that (я даже не подумала об этом)!" said Dorothy joyfully (радостно сказала Дороти). "It's just the thing (это как раз то, что нужно; thing — вещь, предмет; что-то очень важное, нужное, подходящее). I'll go at once for the Golden Cap (я немедленно пойду за Золотой Шапкой)." When she brought it into the Throne Room she spoke the magic words (когда она принесла ее в Тронный Зал, она проговорила волшебные слова), and soon the band of Winged Monkeys flew in through the open window (и вскоре стая Крылатых Обезьян влетела /в зал/ через открытое окно) and stood beside her (и встала около нее).

"This is the second time you have called us (это уже второй раз, когда ты нас вызвала)," said the Monkey King, bowing before the little girl (сказал Король Обезьян, кланяясь пред маленькой девочкой). "What do you wish (что ты желаешь)?"

"I want you to fly with me to Kansas (я хочу, чтобы вы полетели со мной в Канзас)," said Dorothy.

But the Monkey King shook his head (но Король Обезьян покачал головой).

"That cannot be done (это невозможно: «это не может быть сделано»)," he said. "We belong to this country alone, and cannot leave it (мы родом из этой страны, и не можем покинуть ее; to belong — принадлежать, быть собственностью; относиться, иметь отношение; to belong /some place/ — быть родом /из какого-либо места/). There has never been a Winged Monkey in Kansas yet (еще ни одной Крылатой Обезьяны не было в Канзасе), and I suppose there never will be (и я полагаю, что никогда и не будет), for they don't belong there (потому что им там не место). We shall be glad to serve you in any way in our power (мы будем рады послужить тебе любым способом, что в нашей власти), but we cannot cross the desert (но мы не можем пересечь пустыню). Good-bye (прощай)."

"I never thought of that!" said Dorothy joyfully. "It's just the thing. I'll go at once for the Golden Cap." When she brought it into the Throne Room she spoke the magic words, and soon the band of Winged Monkeys flew in through the open window and stood beside her.

"I want you to fly with me to Kansas," said Dorothy.

But the Monkey King shook his head.

"That cannot be done," he said. "We belong to this country alone, and cannot leave it. There has never been a Winged Monkey in Kansas yet, and I suppose there never will be, for they don't belong there. We shall be glad to serve you in any way in our power, but we cannot cross the desert. Good-bye."

And with another bow, the Monkey King spread his wings (и, поклонившись еще раз, Крылатый Король расправил свои крылья) and flew away through the window, followed by all his band (и вылетел через окно, сопровождаемый всей своей стаей).
