The sun shone brightly as our friends turned their faces toward the Land of the South. They were all in the best of spirits, and laughed and chatted together. Dorothy was once more filled with the hope of getting home, and the Scarecrow and the Tin Woodman were glad to be of use to her. As for the Lion, he sniffed the fresh air with delight and whisked his tail from side to side in pure joy at being in the country again, while Toto ran around them and chased the moths and butterflies, barking merrily all the time.

"City life does not agree with me at all (городская жизнь мне вовсе не подходит; to agree — соглашаться; быть полезным/приятным, быть подходящим)," remarked the Lion, as they walked along at a brisk pace (заметил Лев, пока они шли /по дороге/ быстрым шагом; brisk — живой, оживленный, проворный). "I have lost much flesh since I lived there (я очень похудел с тех пор, как стал жить там; flesh — тело; мясо; to lose flesh — худеть: «терять плоть»), and now I am anxious for a chance (и теперь я жду удачного случая; anxious — беспокоящийся, тревожащийся; стремящийся /к чему-либо/, страстно желающий /чего-либо/; chance — случайность, случай; удобный случай, возможность) to show the other beasts how courageous I have grown (чтобы показать другим зверям, каким храбрым я стал; courage — смелость)."

They now turned and took a last look at the Emerald City (тогда они обернулись и в последний раз взглянули: «бросили последний взгляд» на Изумрудный Город).

All they could see was a mass of towers and steeples behind the green walls (все, что они смогли разглядеть, это было скопление башен и шпилей за зелеными стенами; mass — масса; скопление, куча; steeple — колокольня; башня; шпиль), and high up above everything the spires and dome of the Palace of Oz (и высоко над всем этим /возвышались/ шпили и купол Дворца Оза; spire — шпиль, игла, острие).

Dorothy said nothing (Дороти ничего не сказала). Oz had not kept the promise he made her (Оз не сдержал своего обещания, которое он ей дал), but he had done his best (но он сделал все, что смог; to do one’s best — сделать все от себя зависящее), so she forgave him (так что она простила его; to forgive). As he said, he was a good man, even if he was a bad Wizard (как он и сказал, он был хорошим человеком, даже если он и был плохим Волшебником).

"Oz was not such a bad Wizard, after all," said the Tin Woodman, as he felt his heart rattling around in his breast.

"If Oz had taken a dose of the same courage he gave me," added the Lion, "he would have been a brave man." Dorothy said nothing. Oz had not kept the promise he made her, but he had done his best, so she forgave him. As he said, he was a good man, even if he was a bad Wizard.

There was no way of going around it (не было никакой возможности обойти его; way — путь, дорога; способ, средство, метод), for it seemed to extend to the right and left as far as they could see (ибо он, казалось, простирался направо и налево так далеко, насколько они могли видеть); and, besides, they did not dare change the direction of their journey (и, кроме того, они не решались изменить направление своего путешествия) for fear of getting lost (из страха потеряться).

The first day's journey was through the green fields and bright flowers that stretched about the Emerald City on every side.

They slept that night on the grass, with nothing but the stars over them; and they rested very well indeed.

In the morning they traveled on until they came to a thick wood.

There was no way of going around it, for it seemed to extend to the right and left as far as they could see; and, besides, they did not dare change the direction of their journey for fear of getting lost.

So they looked for the place where it would be easiest to get into the forest (поэтому они стали искали место, где было бы легче всего попасть в лес).

The Scarecrow, who was in the lead (Страшила, который шел впереди; lead — руководство, инициатива; первенство, первое место; in the lead — во главе /процессии и т. п./), finally discovered a big tree with such wide-spreading branches (наконец обнаружил большое дерево со столь широко раскинувшимися ветвями) that there was room for the party to pass underneath (что под ним как раз было место, /достаточное для того/, чтобы под ними прошла их компания; room — комната; место, пространство). So he walked forward to the tree (поэтому он пошел прямо к этому дереву; forward — вперед, дальше), but just as he came under the first branches (но, как только он оказался под первыми ветвями: «зашел под первые ветви») they bent down and twined around him (они наклонились и сплелись вокруг него; to bend — гнуть, сгибать; наклоняться; to twine — вить, сучить; обвивать), and the next minute he was raised from the ground (и в следующую же минуту он был поднят с земли) and flung headlong among his fellow travelers (и брошен головой вперед /и упал/ между своими спутниками; fellow — товарищ, человек, принадлежащий к той же группе; to fling — швырнуть).
