'Serpent (змея)!' screamed the Pigeon (пронзительно кричала Голубка).

'I'm not a serpent (я не змея)!' said Alice indignantly (сказала Алиса с возмущением). 'Let me alone (оставьте меня в покое; to leave alone — оставлять, не трогать)!'

'Serpent, I say again (змея, вновь говорю я)!' repeated the Pigeon, but in a more subdued tone (повторила Горлица, но уже более спокойным голосом; to subdue — покорять, подавлять; смягчать, уменьшать; subdued — подчиненный, подавленный; смягченный, приглушенный), and added with a kind of sob (и добавила со всхлипом: «с чем-то вроде рыдания»), 'I've tried every way, and nothing seems to suit them (я испробовала все: «каждый способ», и ничто, кажется, их не устраивает)!'

'I haven't the least idea what you're talking about (я не имею ни малейшего представления, о чем вы говорите),' said Alice.

'Serpent!' screamed the Pigeon.

'I'm not a serpent!' said Alice indignantly. 'Let me alone!'

'Serpent, I say again!' repeated the Pigeon, but in a more subdued tone, and added with a kind of sob, 'I've tried every way, and nothing seems to suit them!'

'I haven't the least idea what you're talking about,' said Alice.

'I've tried the roots of trees (я испробовала корни деревьев), and I've tried banks (и я испробовала берега /реки/), and I've tried hedges (я испробовала изгороди),' the Pigeon went on, without attending to her (продолжала Горлица, не обращая на нее внимания; to attend — посещать, присутствовать; уделять внимание); 'but those serpents (но эти змеи)! Alice was more and more puzzled (Алиса была все более и более озадачена), but she thought there was no use in saying anything more (но она думала, что бесполезно было говорить что-нибудь еще) till the Pigeon had finished (до тех пор, пока Горлица не замолчит: «не закончит»).
