`Faster,' cried the Witch, and she threw her arms about his neck, and her breath was hot upon his face. `Faster, faster!' she cried, and the earth seemed to spin beneath his feet, and his brain grew troubled, and a great terror fell on him, as of some evil thing that was watching him, and at last he became aware that under the shadow of a rock there was a figure that had not been there before.

It was a man (это был какой-то человек) dressed in a suit of black velvet (одетый в костюм из черного бархата), cut in the Spanish fashion (испанского покроя: «скроенный по испанскому фасону»; to cut (cut) — резать; кроить). His face was strangely pale (его лицо было необычно/удивительно бледным), but his lips were like a proud red flower (но губы его были похожи на надменный красный цветок; proud — гордый; высокомерный, заносчивый). He seemed weary (он казался усталым/изнывающим от скуки), and was leaning back (и стоял, опираясь /об утес/; to lean — наклоняться; опираться) toying in a listless manner (играя в равнодушной манере) with the pommel of his dagger (с рукояткой своего кинжала; pommel — головка /эфеса шпаги, кинжала/). It was a man dressed in a suit of black velvet, cut in the Spanish fashion. His face was strangely pale, but his lips were like a proud red flower. He seemed weary, and was leaning back toying in a listless manner with the pommel of his dagger. On the grass beside him lay a plumed hat, and a pair of riding gloves gauntleted with gilt lace, and sewn with seed-pearls wrought into a curious device.

A short cloak lined with sables (короткий плащ, подбитый соболями; to line — класть на подкладку; подбивать) hung from his shoulder (свисал с его плеча; to hang (hung, hanged)), and his delicate white hands (а его изящные = холеные белые руки) were gemmed with rings (были украшены кольцами с драгоценными камнями; gem — драгоценный камень). Heavy eyelids drooped over his eyes (тяжелые веки прикрывали: «свисали над» его глаза; to droop — наклоняться, поникать). At last their eyes met (наконец их глаза встретились; to meet (met)), and wherever he danced (и где бы он ни танцевал) it seemed to him (ему казалось) that the eyes of the man (что взгляд этого человека) were upon him (был на нем = следил за ним). The young Fisherman watched him, as one snared in a spell. At last their eyes met, and wherever he danced it seemed to him that the eyes of the man were upon him. He heard the Witch laugh, and caught her by the waist, and whirled her madly round and round.

Suddenly a dog bayed in the wood (внезапно в лесу залаяла собака), and the dancers stopped (и все танцующие остановились; dancer — танцор, плясун), and going up two by two (и, подходя по двое = парами), knelt down (опускались на колени; to knelt (kneel)), and kissed the man's hands (и целовали руки того самого человека). As they did so (пока они делали это = при этом), a little smile touched his proud lips (легкая улыбка коснулась = заиграла на его гордых губах), as a bird's wing touches the water (так же крыло птицы касается воды) and makes it laugh (и заставляет ее смеяться). But there was disdain in it (но было в ней /улыбке/ презрение/пренебрежение). He kept looking at the young Fisherman (он продолжал смотреть на молодого Рыбака).

`Come! let us worship (пойдем, давай поклонимся; to worship — преклоняться, почитать),' whispered the Witch (прошептала Ведьма), and she led him up (и она повела его; to lead (led)), and a great desire (и сильное желание) to do as she besought him (сделать то, о чем она просила его; to beseech (besought) — умолять, молить) seized on him (охватило его; to seize — хватать, схватить), and he followed her (и он последовал за ней). `Come! let us worship,' whispered the Witch, and she led him up, and a great desire to do as she besought him seized on him, and he followed her. But when he came close, and without knowing why he did it, he made on his breast the sign of the Cross, and called upon the holy name.

As he leapt upon the saddle (вскочив в седло; to leap (lept) — прыгать, скакать) he turned round (он обернулся), and looked at the young Fisherman sadly (и печально взглянул на молодого Рыбака).

No sooner had he done so than the witches screamed like hawks and flew away, and the pallid face that had been watching him twitched with a spasm of pain. The man went over to a little wood, and whistled. A jennet with silver trappings came running to meet him. As he leapt upon the saddle he turned round, and looked at the young Fisherman sadly.

And the Witch with the red hair (и Ведьма с рыжими волосами) tried to fly away also (тоже пыталась улететь прочь), but the Fisherman caught her by her wrists (но Рыбак схватил ее за запястья = за руки), and held her fast (и крепко держал ее; to hold (held)). `Loose me (отцепись от меня; to loose — освобождать, выпускать),' she cried, `and let me go (и отпусти меня: «позволь мне уйти»). For thou hast named (ибо ты назвал имя; thou hast = you have; to name — называть, давать имя) what should not be named (которое не следует называть), and shown the sign (и показал тот знак; to show (showed, shown)) that may not be looked at (на который смотреть нельзя).'

`Nay (нет),' he answered (ответил он), `but I will not let thee go (я не отпущу тебя: «не позволю тебе уйти») till thou hast told me the secret (до тех самых пор, пока ты мне не расскажешь секрет/тайну).'

`What secret (какой секрет)?' said the Witch, wrestling with him like a wild cat (борясь с ним = вырываясь от него, как дикая кошка; to wrestle — бороться), and biting her foam-flecked lips (и кусая свои губы, которые были покрыты пеной; to fleck — покрывать пятнами).
