 The third sister took her brother in just as the first and second had done, telling him not to wonder at anything he saw.

“Who is that stranger there with you (кто этот незнакомец с тобой)?” asked he of the wife (спросил он у жены).

“This is my brother, who has come to see me.”

They all took supper (они все /вместе/ поужинали: «приняли ужин»; to take /took, taken/ – брать; принимать /пищу, лекарство/) and slept that night (и проспали /всю/ ночь: «и спали той ночью»; to sleep /slept/). When the eagle was going away in the morning (когда орел собирался из замка: «прочь» поутру), he pulled a feather out of his wing (он вытащил перо из своего крыла), and said to the boy (и сказал юноше), “Keep this (сохрани его: «это»); it may serve you (оно может тебе пригодиться: «оно может послужить тебе»). If you are ever in straits (если ты когда-либо окажешься в затруднительном положении; straits – стесненные обстоятельства, затруднительное положение, нужда) and want help (и будешь нуждаться в помощи; to want – хотеть, желать; нуждаться, испытывать потребность /в чем-л., ком-л./), call on what eagles are in the world (призови всех орлов, что живут на свете: «призови /всех/ тех орлов, какие есть в мире»; to call – кричать; to call on smb. – призывать, взывать, обращаться; what – что? каков?; тот, который), and they’ll come to you (и они придут тебе /на помощь/: «они придут к тебе»).”

 They all took supper and slept that night. When the eagle was going away in the morning, he pulled a feather out of his wing, and said to the boy, “Keep this; it may serve you. If you are ever in straits and want help, call on what eagles are in the world, and they’ll come to you.”

“In that castle on the white hill beyond (в том замке, на том белом холме, вон там /вдали/; beyond – вне, за пределами; вдали, дальше, на расстоянии),” said the sister, “lives a giant (живет великан), who stole from her home (который похитил из дома: «из ее дома»; to steal /stole, stolen/) the most beautiful young woman in the world (самую красивую молодую женщину на свете: «в мире»). From all parts (со всех сторон света: «из всех краев»; part – часть, доля; край, местность) the greatest heroes (величайшие герои; great – большой, огромный; великий) and champions (и отважные воины; champion – поборник, защитник /чего-л./; /поэт./ отважный воин, витязь) and kings’ sons are coming (и королевичи: «королевские сыновья» приезжают) to take her away from the giant (чтобы забрать ее у великана) and marry her (и жениться на ней).

 “In that castle on the white hill beyond,” said the sister, “lives a giant, who stole from her home the most beautiful young woman in the world. From all parts the greatest heroes and champions and kings’ sons are coming to take her away from the giant and marry her.

There is not a man of them all (но среди них нет никого: «но нет человека из них всех») who is able to conquer the giant (кто способен победить великана; to conquer – завоевывать, покорить; побеждать) and free the young woman (и освободить молодую женщину = девушку); but the giant conquers them (а великан побеждает их), cuts their heads off (отрубает их головы; to cut – резать; to cut off – обрезать, отрезать, отрубать), and then eats their flesh (и затем ест их плоть; flesh – тело, мясо; плоть). When he has picked the bones clean (когда он обгложет кости дочиста; to pick – подбирать, выбирать; снимать /мясо с костей/, обгладывать /кость/; clean – чистый, опрятный; clean – /эмоц. – усил./ совершенно, полностью; /разг./ начисто), he throws them out (он их выбрасывает); and the whole place around the castle (и все пространство: «место» вокруг замка) is white with the bones of the men (бело от костей тех людей) that the giant has eaten (которых съел великан; to eat /ate, eaten/).”

 There is not a man of them all who is able to conquer the giant and free the young woman; but the giant conquers them, cuts their heads off, and then eats their flesh. When he has picked the bones clean, he throws them out; and the whole place around the castle is white with the bones of the men that the giant has eaten.”

“I must go (я должен пойти),” said the boy (сказал юноша), “to that castle to know (к тому замку, чтобы понять; to know – знать; осознавать, понимать) can I kill the giant (смогу ли я убить великана) and bring away the young woman (и увести ту девушку: «молодую женщину»; to bring – приносить; приводить /с собой/; away – прочь).”

 “I must go,” said the boy, “to that castle to know can I kill the giant and bring away the young woman.”

So he took leave of his sister (итак, он попрощался со своей сестрой; to take /took, taken/ – брать; leave – разрешение, позволение; прощание, расставание; to take one’s leave – прощаться, уходить), put on the cloak of darkness (надел плащ-невидимку: «плащ темноты»), took his sword with him (взял с собой свой меч), and was soon inside the castle (и вскоре был в замке /великана/: «внутри замка»). The giant was fighting with champions outside (великан сражался с отважными воинами перед замком: «снаружи»; champion – поборник, защитник /чего-л./; /поэт./ отважный воин, витязь). When the boy saw the young woman (когда юноша увидел девушку: «молодую женщину») he took off the cloak of darkness (он снял свой плащ-невидимку: «плащ темноты»; to take /took, taken/ off) and spoke to her (и заговорил с ней; to speak /spoke, spoken/).

 So he took leave of his sister, put on the cloak of darkness, took his sword with him, and was soon inside the castle. The giant was fighting with champions outside. When the boy saw the young woman he took off the cloak of darkness and spoke to her.

“Oh (о)!” said she (сказала она), “what can you do against the giant (что ты можешь сделать против великана)? No man has ever come to this castle (ни разу не пришел сюда человек: «никакой человек когда-либо /не/ приходил сюда») without losing his life (не лишившись жизни: «без потери его жизни»; to lose – терять; лишиться). The giant kills every man (великан убивает /всех и/ каждого); and no one has ever come here so big (и сюда не приходил никто настолько большой) that the giant did not eat him at one meal (чтобы великан не съел его за один присест: «за один прием пищи»).”

 “Oh!” said she, “what can you do against the giant? No man has ever come to this castle without losing his life. The giant kills every man; and no one has ever come here so big that the giant did not eat him at one meal.”

“And is there no way to kill him (и нет никакого способа убить его; way – путь, дорога; способ, метод, образ действия)?” asked the boy (спросил мальчик).

“I think not (думаю, нет),” said she.

“Well (ну, ладно), if you’ll give me something to eat (если ты дашь мне что-нибудь поесть), I’ll stay here (я останусь здесь; to stay – оставаться, не уходить; останавливаться, гостить); and when the giant comes in (а когда войдет великан), I’ll do my best (я сделаю все, что смогу: «сделаю мое наилучшее»; best – самое лучшее, высшая степень чего-л.; to do one’s best – сделать все возможное, не жалеть усилий) to kill him (чтобы убить его). But don’t let on (но не говори никому; to let – позволять; to let on – делать вид, притворяться; выдавать /секрет и т. п./) that I am here (что я здесь).”
