For the next three days everybody went about saying, `White rose, Red rose, Red rose, White rose;' and the King gave orders that the Page's salary was to be doubled. As he received no salary at all this was not of much use to him, but it was considered a great honour, and was duly published in the Court Gazette.

When the three days were over (когда три дня прошли = три дня спустя; to be over — закончится, завершиться) the marriage was celebrated (сыграли свадьбу: «свадьбы была отпразднована»). It was a magnificent ceremony (церемония была великолепной/пышной), and the bride and bridegroom (и невеста с женихом) walked hand in hand (прошли рука об руку: «рука в руке») under a canopy of purple velvet (под балдахином из пурпурного бархата) embroidered with little pearls (расшитого мелкими жемчужинами; to embroider — вышивать). Then there was a State Banquet (затем состоялся Королевский Торжественный обед/Банкет; state — государство), which lasted for five hours (который длился пять часов). The Prince and Princess sat at the top of the Great Hall (Принц и Принцесса сидели на почетных местах в Большом Зале; to sit (sat); top — верхушка; высокое положение) and drank out of a cup of clear crystal (и пили из чаши /изготовленной/ из прозрачного хрусталя; to drink (drank, drunk); clear — ясный, чистый). Only true lovers (только настоящие влюбленные) could drink out of this cup (могли пить из той чаши), for if false lips touched it (оттого, что если лживые уста касались ее; false — ложный, фальшивый), it grew grey (она становилась серой; to grow (grew, grown) — расти; становиться, делаться) and dull (и тусклой; dull — тупой, хмурый; тусклый) and cloudy (и мутной; cloud — облако, cloudy — облачный, хмурый; мутный).

When the three days were over the marriage was celebrated. `What are fireworks like?' she had asked the Prince, one morning, as she was walking on the terrace.

`They are like the Aurora Borealis (/они похожи/ на Северное Сияние; aurora — Аврора, утренняя заря; полярное сияние),' said the King (сказал Король), who always answered questions (который всегда отвечал на вопросы) that were addressed to other people (которые были адресованы/обращены другим людям), `only much more natural (только гораздо более натуральное; natural — естественный, настоящий). I prefer them to stars myself (я сам предпочитаю его: «их» звездам), as you always know (оттого, что всегда знаешь) when they are going to appear (когда они = огни фейерверка появятся), and they are as delightful (и они настолько же восхитительны; delight — восторг, восхищение) as my own flute-playing (как моя собственная игра на флейте). You must certainly see them (вам непременно необходимо их увидеть).'

So at the end of the King's garden a great stand had been set up, and as soon as the Royal Pyrotechnist had put everything in its proper place, the fireworks began to talk to each other.

`The world is certainly very beautiful (мир, действительно, очень красив),' cried a little Squib (воскликнула маленькая Петарда/Шутиха). `Just look at those yellow tulips (только взгляните на те желтые тюльпаны).
