`My desire is but for a little thing,' said the young Fisherman, `yet hath the Priest been wroth with me, and driven me forth. It is but for a little thing, and the merchants have mocked at me, and denied me. Therefore am I come to thee, though men call thee evil, and whatever be thy price I shall pay it.'

`What would'st thou (чего же ты желаешь; would'st = would)?' asked the Witch, coming near to him (спросила Ведьма, подходя ближе к нему).

`I would send my soul away from me (я хочу прогнать свою душу прочь),' answered the young Fisherman (ответил молодой Рыбак).

The Witch grew pale (Ведьма побледнела; pale — бледный, to grow (grew, grown) — расти; становиться, делаться), and shuddered (и задрожала), and hid her face in her blue mantle (и закрыла: «спрятала» свое лицо своей синей накидкой/мантией; to hide (hid, hidden)). `Pretty boy (мой хорошенький мальчик), pretty boy,' she muttered (прошептала она), `that is a terrible thing to do (какая ужасная вещь/какой ужасный поступок).'

He tossed his brown curls (он тряхнул своими каштановыми кудрями; to toss — бросать; вскидывать голову, brown — коричневый; каштановый /о цвете волос/; curl — локон, завиток; вьющиеся волосы) and laughed (и засмеялся). `My soul is nought to me (моя душа для меня пустяк; nought — ничто; вещь, не стоящая внимания),' he answered (ответил он). `I cannot see it (я не могу увидеть ее). I may not touch it (я не могу потрогать ее). I do not know it (я не знаю ее).'

`What would'st thou?' asked the Witch, coming near to him.

`I would send my soul away from me,' answered the young Fisherman.

The Witch grew pale, and shuddered, and hid her face in her blue mantle. `Pretty boy, pretty boy,' she muttered, `that is a terrible thing to do.'

He tossed his brown curls and laughed. `My soul is nought to me,' he answered. `I cannot see it. I may not touch it. I do not know it.'

`What wilt thou give me (что ты дашь мне) if I tell thee (если я расскажу тебе)?' asked the Witch looking down at him (спросила Ведьма, глядя на него) with her beautiful eyes (своими прекрасными глазами).

`Five pieces of gold (пять золотых монет),' he said, `and my nets (и мои сети), and the wattled house where I live (и мой плетенный дом = тростниковую хижину, в которой: «где» я живу), and the painted boat (и расписную лодку) in which I sail (в которой я плаваю /по морю/). `What wilt thou give me if I tell thee?' asked the Witch looking down at him with her beautiful eyes.

`Five pieces of gold,' he said, `and my nets, and the wattled house where I live, and the painted boat in which I sail. Only tell me how to get rid of my soul, and I will give thee all that I possess.'

She laughed mockingly at him (она с издевкой захохотала над ним), and struck him (и ударила его; to strike (struck, stricken)) with the spray of hemlock (веточкой болиголова). `I can turn the autumn leaves into gold (я могу превращать осенние листья в золото),' she answered (ответила она), `and I can weave the pale moonbeams into silver (и я могу соткать бледные лунные лучи в серебро; to weave — ткать, плести; beam — луч) if I will it (если я этого захочу).
