In the forest outside Torquilstone, two hundred men were gathered already and more were arriving every minute. When Cedric's men at Rotherwood heard that their master had been taken prisoner by Front-de-Boeuf, they came in large numbers and joined the outlaws outside Torquilstone. The messenger passed through the growing crowd and gave the Templar's letter to Friar Tuck.

"Why, this is in French (ба, да оно на французском)!" the monk exclaimed (монах воскликнул) and passed it on to the Black Knight (и передал его дальше, Черному рыцарю; to pass on — проходить дальше; передавать дальше), who translated it into Saxon for the rest of them (который перевел его на саксонский для остальных из них = для всех остальных).

"Execute the noble Cedric (казнить благородного Седрика)!" exclaimed Wamba (воскликнул Вамба), when the Black Knight had finished (когда Черный рыцарь закончил). "You must be mistaken, Sir Knight (вы, должно быть, ошиблись, сэр рыцарь; mistake — ошибка; заблуждение, недоразумение)."

"If there were someone among us (если бы был кто-то из нас; among — между, посреди; из числа, в числе) who could get into the castle (кто мог бы проникнуть в замок; to get into — войти, проникнуть куда-либо), he could find out how the castle is being defended (то он смог бы разузнать, как замок охраняется; to defend — защищать/ся/)," said the Knight. "I think, since they ask for a man of God (я думаю, раз уж они просят духовное лицо), the monk should be sent in (то монаха и следовало бы отправить в /замок/; to send — посылать)."

"Why, this is in French!" the monk exclaimed and passed it on to the Black Knight, who translated it into Saxon for the rest of them.

"Execute the noble Cedric!" exclaimed Wamba, when the Black Knight had finished. "You must be mistaken, Sir Knight."

"If there were someone among us who could get into the castle, he could find out how the castle is being defended," said the Knight. "I think, since they ask for a man of God, the monk should be sent in."

Friar Tuck refused loudly (брат Тук отказался громогласно).

"Is there no one here who will go (нет здесь никого, кто пойдет)?" asked the Black Knight.

Everyone looked at each other in silence (все смотрели друг на друга молча: «в тишине»; silence — тишина, безмолвие; молчание).

"I see (я понял; to see — видеть, глядеть, смотреть; понимать, знать)," said Wamba, after a short pause (сказал Вамба после короткой паузы; pause — пауза, перерыв; остановка). "The fool must be a fool (дурак должен быть дураком) and risk his neck when wise men refuse (и рисковать своей шеей, когда умные люди = мудрецы отказываются; wise — мудрый; умудренный)."

Friar Tuck refused loudly.

"Is there no one here who will go?" asked the Black Knight.

Everyone looked at each other in silence.

"I see," said Wamba, after a short pause. "The fool must be a fool and risk his neck when wise men refuse."

"Pax vobiscum (мир вам /лат./)" said Wamba, who was now wearing the monk's robe (сказал Вамба, который теперь был одет в монашеское одеяние), and he set off for the castle (и он отправился в замок).

"Has he got enough sense to do this, do you think?" the Black Knight asked Gurth.

"I don't know," said Gurth. "But if he hasn't, then it will be the first time he has not been wise in his foolishness."

"Pax vobiscum" said Wamba, who was now wearing the monk's robe, and he set off for the castle.

When the jester arrived at the gate of Torquilstone (когда шут прибыл к воротам Торкилстона), the guard demanded to know who he was (стражники потребовали, чтобы он сообщил, кто он такой; to demand — требовать, настоятельно просить; to know — знать, иметь представление; познакомиться).

"Pax vobiscum (мир вам)," answered the jester, pulling the hood over his face (ответил шут, натягивая капюшон на лицо; to pull — тянуть, тащить; натягивать, надвигать). "I am a poor monk who has been asked to visit some prisoners in this castle (я бедный монах, которого попросили посетить каких-то пленников в этом замке)."

The guard let Wamba through the gate (охранник позволил Вамбе /пройти/ через ворота). When the jester was taken to Front-de-Boeuf (когда шута привели к Фронт-де-Бёфу), he shook with fear (он дрожал от страха).

"Pax vobiscum," he said weakly (сказал он слабо = слабым голосом).

When the jester arrived at the gate of Torquilstone, the guard demanded to know who he was.

"Pax vobiscum," answered the jester, pulling the hood over his face. "I am a poor monk who has been asked to visit some prisoners in this castle."

The guard let Wamba through the gate. When the jester was taken to Front-de-Boeuf, he shook with fear.

"Pax vobiscum," he said weakly.

"Who are you, monk (кто ты, монах)?" asked Front-de-Boeuf.

"Pax vobiscum," said the jester. "I was travelling through the forest (я странствовал по лесу) when I was taken prisoner by outlaws (когда я был взят в плен разбойниками). They sent me here (они отправили меня сюда) to hear the confessions of some prisoners (чтобы выслушать исповеди = исповедать каких-то пленников)."

"Good (хорошо)," answered Front-de-Boeuf. "Can you tell me (можешь ли сказать мне) how many outlaws there are out there (сколько разбойников там /в лесу/)?"

"At least five hundred (по меньшей мере пятьсот)."
