Долгое время для лечения половых поведенческих расстройств у самцов использовались прогестагены. Механизм их действия на самцов не совсем ясен. Обычно прогестагены назначают как антиандрогенное средство, но они оказывают также общее успокаивающее действие на центральную нервную систему, подавляя состояние тревоги, чего невозможно добиться с помощью кастрации (Stabenfeldt,
1974). Животные обычно хорошо реагируют на эти препараты, в частности на делмадинона ацетат; кастрация подобного эффекта не дает.
К сожалению, прогестагены обладают потенциально опасными побочными эффектами, а их отмена приводит к рецидиву проблемного поведения, но тем не менее эти препараты часто назначают при неопределенном диагнозе (см. гл. 23). Однако их применение должно опираться на точную диагностику, поскольку современный уровень знаний и наличие более специализированных лекарственных средств позволяют выбрать иной вариант терапии.
