Early the next morning (рано /следующим/ утром) the Mayor was walking in the square below (Мэр города прогуливался по площади /внизу = на которой стоял памятник/; square — квадрат; площадь) in company with the Town Councillors (в обществе Городских Советников; company — общество, компания). As they passed the column (когда они проходили мимо колонны) he looked up at the statue (он поднял глаза на статую):

`Dear me (Боже мой)! how shabby the Happy Prince looks (каким оборвышем выглядит этот Счастливый Принц; shabby — поношенный, одетый в лохмотья)!' he said.

`How shabby indeed (действительно, каким оборвышем)!' cried the Town Councillors (закричали Городские Советники), who always agreed with the Mayor (которые всегда соглашались с Мэром), and they went up to look at it (и они приблизились /к статуе/, чтобы взглянуть на нее).

`The ruby has fallen out of his sword (рубин вывалился из его шпаги), his eyes are gone (глаза исчезли; gone — пропащий, потерянный), and he is golden no longer (и он уж больше не золоченый),' said the Mayor; `in fact, he is little better than a beggar (на самом-то деле, он едва лучше попрошайки; to beg — просить; нищенствовать)!'

`Little better than a beggar (немногим лучше попрошайки)' said the Town councillors.

Early the next morning the Mayor was walking in the square below in company with the Town Councillors. As they passed the column he looked up at the statue: `Dear me! how shabby the Happy Prince looks!' he said.

`How shabby indeed!' cried the Town Councillors, who always agreed with the Mayor, and they went up to look at it.

`The ruby has fallen out of his sword, his eyes are gone, and he is golden no longer,' said the Mayor; `in fact, he is little better than a beggar!'

`Little better than a beggar' said the Town councillors.

`And here is actually a dead bird (и здесь еще и мертвая птица) at his feet (у его ног)!' continued the Mayor (продолжал Мэр). `We must really issue a proclamation (мы просто обязаны издать официальное объявление; to issue — выпускать; издавать указы) that birds are not to be allowed to die here (что птицам воспрещается умирать здесь; to allow — позволять, разрешать).'

And the Town Clerk (и Секретарь Городского Совета; clerk — конторский служащий; секретарь) made a note of the suggestion (записал /в книгу/ это предложение; to make (made); note — заметка, запись; to suggest — предлагать, советовать).

So they pulled down the statue of the Happy Prince (тогда они снесли статую Счастливого Принца; to pull — тянуть, тащить; down — вниз).

`As he is no longer beautiful (так как он уж больше не прекрасен) he is no longer useful (он больше уж и не нужен; useful — полезный, пригодный),' said the Art Professor at the University (сказал Профессор Искусствоведения в Университете; art — искусство; гуманитарные науки).

`And here is actually a dead bird at his feet!' continued the Mayor. `We must really issue a proclamation that birds are not to be allowed to die here.' And the Town Clerk made a note of the suggestion.

So they pulled down the statue of the Happy Prince. `As he is no longer beautiful he is no longer useful,' said the Art Professor at the University.

Then they melted the statue in a furnace (затем они расплавили статую в печи; to melt — таять, плавить), and the Mayor held a meeting of the Corporation (и Мэр провел собрание Городского Совета; to hold (held) — держать; устраивать мероприятия; corporation — объединение; муниципалитет) to decide what was to be done with the metal (чтобы решить, что следует сделать с металлом).

`We must have another statue, of course (мы должны сделать: «иметь» другую статую, конечно),' he said, `and it shall be a statue of myself (и это будет статуя /изображающая/ меня).'

`Of myself (/изображающая/ меня),' said each of the Town Councillors (сказал каждый из Городских Советников), and they quarrelled (и они /стали/ спорить и ссориться; quarrel — спор, ссора). When I last heard of them (когда я в последний раз слышал о них; to hear (heard)) they were quarrelling still (они все еще спорили).

Then they melted the statue in a furnace, and the Mayor held a meeting of the Corporation to decide what was to be done with the metal.

`We must have another statue, of course,' he said, `and it shall be a statue of myself.'

`Of myself,' said each of the Town Councillors, and they quarrelled. When I last heard of them they were quarrelling still.

`What a strange thing (какое странное дело; thing — вещь, явление, дело)!' said the overseer of the workmen (сказал мастер /надсмотрщик за рабочими/; overseer — надзиратель; мастер, контролер) at the foundry (в литейном цеху; to found — плавить, отливать). `This broken lead heart (это разбитое свинцовое сердце) will not melt in the furnace (не будет = не хочет плавиться в печи). We must throw it away (мы должны выбросить его; to throw (threw, thrown) — бросать, швырять).'
