'What for (за что)?' said the one who had spoken first (спросил тот, кто заговорил первым).
'That's none of your business, Two (это совершенно не твое дело, Двойка)!' said Seven.
'Yes, it is his business (да, это его дело)!' said Five, 'and I'll tell him (и я скажу ему, /за что/) — it was for bringing the cook tulip-roots instead of onions (за то, что он принес кухарке луковицы тюльпанов вместо лука; root — корень).'
lay [leI], blame [bleIm], deserved [dI'zE:vd], beheaded [bI'hedId], tulip ['tju:lIp], instead [In'sted], onion ['Anjqn]
On which Seven looked up and said, 'That's right, Five! Always lay the blame on others!'
'You'd better not talk!' said Five. 'I heard the Queen say only yesterday you deserved to be beheaded!'
'What for?' said the one who had spoken first.
'That's none of your business, Two!' said Seven.
'Yes, it is his business!' said Five, 'and I'll tell him-it was for bringing the cook tulip-roots instead of onions.'
Seven flung down his brush, and had just begun (Семерка бросил наземь свою кисть и как раз начал /говорить/; to fling — швырнуть) 'Well, of all the unjust things (ну, такой несправедливости: «из всех несправедливых вещей»…)—' when his eye chanced to fall upon Alice (когда его взгляд случайно упал на Алису; to chance — рискнуть; случиться, случайно произойти), as she stood watching them (в то время как та стояла и смотрела на них), and he checked himself suddenly (и он вдруг осекся; to check oneself — остановиться, удержаться, сдержаться): the others looked round also, and all of them bowed low (остальные = двое других также оглянулись, и все они низко поклонились).
'Would you tell me (не скажете ли вы мне),' said Alice, a little timidly (спросила Алиса немного неуверенно), 'why you are painting those roses (зачем вы красите эти розы)?'
flung [flAN], brush [brAS], just [dZAst], begun [bI'gAn], unjust [An'dZAst], chance [tSQ:ns]
Seven flung down his brush, and had just begun 'Well, of all the unjust things—' when his eye chanced to fall upon Alice, as she stood watching them, and he checked himself suddenly: the others looked round also, and all of them bowed low.
'Would you tell me,' said Alice, a little timidly, 'why you are painting those roses?'
Five and Seven said nothing, but looked at Two (Пятерка и Семерка ничего не сказали, а взглянули на Двойку). Two began in a low voice (Двойка начал тихим голосом; low — низкий, невысокий; тихий, негромкий), 'Why the fact is, you see, Miss, this here ought to have been a red rose-tree (ну, дело в том, видите ли, мисс, что здесь должен был расти алый розовый куст), and we put a white one in by mistake (а мы посадили здесь белый по ошибке); and if the Queen was to find it out, we should all have our heads cut off, you know (и если бы Королева узнала об этом, она бы приказала отрубить нам головы, знаете ли). So you see, Miss, we're doing our best, afore she comes, to (поэтому, видите ли, мисс, мы делаем все возможное, прежде чем она придет, чтобы…; to do one’s best — делать все возможное, не щадить усилий)—' At this moment Five, who had been anxiously looking across the garden, called out 'The Queen! The Queen!' (в этот самый момент Пятерка, который с тревогой оглядывал сад, крикнул: "Королева!") and the three gardeners instantly threw themselves flat upon their faces (и трое садовников тут же упали: «бросились» плашмя, /уткнувшись/ лицами в землю; to throw — бросать; flat — плоско, ровно; плашмя). There was a sound of many footsteps (раздался топот многочисленных ног; sound — звук, шум; footstep — шаг, поступь; звук шагов), and Alice looked round, eager to see the Queen (и Алиса оглянулась, потому что ей не терпелось увидеть Королеву).
ought [O:t], mistake [mI'steIk], afore [q'fO:], anxiously ['xNklqslI], across [q'krPs], footstep ['fVtstep], eager ['i:gq]
Five and Seven said nothing, but looked at Two. Two began in a low voice, 'Why the fact is, you see, Miss, this here ought to have been a red rose-tree, and we put a white one in by mistake; and if the Queen was to find it out, we should all have our heads cut off, you know. So you see, Miss, we're doing our best, afore she comes, to—' At this moment Five, who had been anxiously looking across the garden, called out 'The Queen! The Queen!' and the three gardeners instantly threw themselves flat upon their faces. There was a sound of many footsteps, and Alice looked round, eager to see the Queen.
First came ten soldiers carrying clubs (первыми шли десять солдат, которые несли дубинки); these were all shaped like the three gardeners, oblong and flat (все они обликом походили на трех садовников — /они были/ долговязыми и плоскими; shape — форма, очертание; вид, образ; to shape — придавать форму; oblong — продолговатый, вытянутый), with their hands and feet at the corners (руки и ноги у них /располагались/ по углам): next the ten courtiers (затем /шли/ десять придворных); these were ornamented all over with diamonds (они были украшены ромбами с головы до ног; diamond — алмаз, бриллиант; ромб; тж. бубны, бубновая масть), and walked two and two, as the soldiers did (и шли они по двое, так же, как и солдаты). After these came the royal children (вслед за ними шли королевские дети); there were ten of them (их было десять), and the little dears came jumping merrily along hand in hand, in couples (и милые крошки шли парами, радостно прыгая, держа друг друга за руки; dear — /в обращении/ дорогой, милый; душка, прелесть, паинька; hand in hand — рука об руку; couple — пара, два): they were all ornamented with hearts (все они были украшены сердечками).

Next came the guests, mostly Kings and Queens, and among them Alice recognised the White Rabbit (следом шли гости, по большей части Короли и Королевы, и среди них Алиса узнала Белого Кролика; to recognize — осознавать, постигать; узнавать, опознавать): it was talking in a hurried nervous manner (он разговаривал в поспешной нервной манере), smiling at everything that was said (улыбался всему, что говорилось), and went by without noticing her (и прошел мимо, не обратив на нее внимания). Then followed the Knave of Hearts (затем следовал Червонный Валет), carrying the King's crown on a crimson velvet cushion (неся королевскую корону на малиновой бархатной подушечке); and, last of all this grand procession, came The King and Queen of Hearts (и, последними в этой грандиозной процессии шли Червонные Король и Королева).
guest [gest], mostly ['mqVstlI], recognize ['rekqgnaIz], nervous ['nE:vqs], smiling ['smaIlIN], crimson ['krImzn], velvet ['velvIt], cushion [kVSn], procession [prq'seSn]
Next came the guests, mostly Kings and Queens, and among them Alice recognised the White Rabbit: it was talking in a hurried nervous manner, smiling at everything that was said, and went by without noticing her. Then followed the Knave of Hearts, carrying the King's crown on a crimson velvet cushion; and, last of all this grand procession, came The King and Queen of Hearts.
Alice was rather doubtful whether she ought not to lie down on her face like the three gardeners (Алиса колебалась: не должна ли была и она пасть ниц, как и трое садовников; doubt — сомнение, нерешительность; doubtful — сомневающийся, колеблющийся; to lie down — лечь, прилечь), but she could not remember ever having heard of such a rule at processions (но она так и не смогла припомнить, чтобы она когда-нибудь слышала о таком правиле /при виде/ процессий); 'and besides, what would be the use of a procession (и кроме того, зачем вообще нужна процессия; use — употребление, применение; цель, назначение),' thought she, 'if people had all to lie down upon their faces (если бы всем людям пришлось пасть ниц; people — народ, нация; люди, население, жители), so that they couldn't see it (так, что они не смогли бы ее увидеть)?' So she stood still where she was, and waited (поэтому она спокойно стояла на месте: «где она была» и ждала).
doubtful ['daVtfVl], lie down ['laI'daVn], rule [ru:l], besides [bI'saIdz]
Alice was rather doubtful whether she ought not to lie down on her face like the three gardeners, but she could not remember every having heard of such a rule at processions; 'and besides, what would be the use of a procession,' thought she, 'if people had all to lie down upon their faces, so that they couldn't see it?' So she stood still where she was, and waited.
When the procession came opposite to Alice (когда шествие поравнялось с Алисой; opposite — напротив), they all stopped and looked at her (все они остановились и взглянули на нее), and the Queen said severely 'Who is this?' (а Королева сурово спросила: "Кто это?"). She said it to the Knave of Hearts (она сказала это, /обращаясь/ к Червонному Валету), who only bowed and smiled in reply (который только поклонился и улыбнулся в ответ).
