Here the other guinea-pig cheered, and was suppressed.

'Come, that finished the guinea-pigs!' thought Alice. 'Now we shall get on better.'

The next witness was the Duchess's cook (следующим свидетелем была кухарка Герцогини). She carried the pepper-box in her hand (она несла перечницу в руке), and Alice guessed who it was, even before she got into the court (и Алиса догадалась, кто это был, даже до того, как она вошла в зал суда), by the way the people near the door began sneezing all at once (по тому, как люди, сидевшие рядом с дверью, начали чихать все разом).

'Give your evidence (давай свои показания),' said the King.

'Shan't (не буду),' said the cook.

The King looked anxiously at the White Rabbit, who said in a low voice (Король с тревогой взглянул на Белого Кролика, который сказал тихим голосом), 'Your Majesty must cross-examine this witness (Ваше Величество должен подвергнуть этого свидетеля перекрестному допросу; to examine — рассматривать, осматривать; допрашивать /обвиняемого, свидетеля/).'

The next witness was the Duchess's cook. She carried the pepper-box in her hand, and Alice guessed who it was, even before she got into the court, by the way the people near the door began sneezing all at once.

The King looked anxiously at the White Rabbit, who said in a low voice, 'Your Majesty must cross-examine this witness.'

'Well, if I must, I must (ну, раз я должен, значит должен),' the King said, with a melancholy air (сказал Король с печальным выражением лица; air — воздух, атмосфера; вид, выражение лица), and, after folding his arms and frowning at the cook till his eyes were nearly out of sight (и, сложив руки и нахмурившись, глядя на кухарку так, что его глаза почти что исчезли из виду), he said in a deep voice (он сказал низким голосом), 'What are tarts made of (из чего сделаны пирожные)?'

'Collar that Dormouse (схватить эту Соню; collar — воротник; to collar — надеть воротник, ошейник и т. п.; разг. захватить, завладеть),' the Queen shrieked out. 'Behead that Dormouse (обезглавить эту Соню)! Turn that Dormouse out of court (вышвырнуть эту Соню из зала суда; to turn out — зд. выгонять)! Suppress him (подавить ее)! Pinch him (ущипнуть ее)! Off with his whiskers (выдернуть ей усы)!'

'Collar that Dormouse,' the Queen shrieked out. 'Behead that Dormouse! Turn that Dormouse out of court! Suppress him! Pinch him! Off with his whiskers!'

For some minutes the whole court was in confusion (несколько минут весь зал суда пребывал в смятении), getting the Dormouse turned out (занимаясь тем, что вышвыривал Соню), and, by the time they had settled down again, the cook had disappeared (и, к тому моменту, когда они все снова успокоились, кухарка исчезла).

'Never mind (не беда)!' said the King, with an air of great relief (сказал Король с видом глубокого облегчения). 'Call the next witness (вызвать следующего свидетеля).' For some minutes the whole court was in confusion, getting the Dormouse turned out, and, by the time they had settled down again, the cook had disappeared.

'Never mind!' said the King, with an air of great relief. 'Call the next witness.' And he added in an undertone to the Queen, 'Really, my dear, you must cross-examine the next witness. It quite makes my forehead ache!'

Alice watched the White Rabbit as he fumbled over the list (Алиса наблюдала за Белым Кроликом, в то время как тот вертел в руках свой список), feeling very curious to see what the next witness would be like (ей было очень интересно узнать, каков будет следующий свидетель; like — подобный, похожий), '—for they haven't got much evidence yet (потому что пока они получили не очень-то много улик),' she said to herself (сказала она про себя).
