I put out my hand and touched something soft (я вытянул руку и коснулся чего-то мягкого). I turned with my heart in my mouth, and saw a queer little ape-like figure, its head held down in a peculiar manner, running across the sunlit space behind me. It blundered against a block of granite, staggered aside, and in a moment was hidden in a black shadow beneath another pile of ruined masonry.

'My impression of it is, of course, imperfect (мое впечатление о нем, конечно, было неполное: «несовершенное»); but I know it was a dull white (я знаю только, что оно = этосущество было грязно-белое), and had strange large greyish-red eyes (и /что/ у него были странные, большие, серовато-красные глаза); also that there was flaxen hair on its head and down its back (его голова и спина были /покрыты/ светлой шерстью; flaxen — льняной; светло-желтый, соломенно-желтый). I sat upon the edge of the well telling myself that, at any rate, there was nothing to fear (я присел на его край, говоря себе, что мне, во всяком случае, нечего опасаться), and that there I must descend for the solution of my difficulties (и что я должен спуститься /туда/ для решения моих трудностей). And withal I was absolutely afraid to go (но вместе с тем я ужасно боялся идти; withal — к тому же, вдобавок; в то же время; тем не менее)! As I hesitated (пока я колебался), two of the beautiful Upper-world people came running in their amorous sport across the daylight in the shadow (двое прекрасных наземных жителей, /увлеченные/ любовной игрой, пробежали мимо меня по дневному свету в тень; sport— забава, развлечение). The male pursued the female (мужчина бежал за женщиной; to pursue — преследовать, бежатьза/кем-либо/), flinging flowers at her as he ran (бросая в нее цветами на бегу: «когда бежал»).
