She pitied him deeply. 'What is his sorrow?' she asked the Gryphon, and the Gryphon answered, very nearly in the same words as before, 'It's all his fancy, that: he hasn't got no sorrow, you know. Come on!'

So they went up to the Mock Turtle, who looked at them with large eyes full of tears, but said nothing.

'This here young lady,' said the Gryphon, 'she wants for to know your history, she do.'

'I'll tell it her,' said the Mock Turtle in a deep, hollow tone: 'sit down, both of you, and don't speak a word till I've finished.'

So they sat down, and nobody spoke for some minutes (так что они сели, и все они молчали: «никто /ничего/ не говорил» несколько минут). Alice thought to herself, 'I don't see how he can even finish, if he doesn't begin' (Алиса подумала про себя: "Не понимаю, как он сможет даже закончить, если он и не начинает). But she waited patiently (но она терпеливо ждала).

'Once (когда-то: «однажды»),' said the Mock Turtle at last, with a deep sigh (сказал Псевдо-Черепаха наконец, с глубоким вздохом), 'I was a real Turtle (я был настоящей Черепахой).'

'Once,' said the Mock Turtle at last, with a deep sigh, 'I was a real Turtle.'

These words were followed by a very long silence (за этими словами последовало очень долгое молчание), broken only by an occasional exclamation of 'Hjckrrh!' from the Gryphon (которое нарушалось только, время от времени, восклицаниями Грифона: «хккр, хккр!»), and the constant heavy sobbing of the Mock Turtle (и постоянными тяжелыми всхлипываниями Псевдо-Черепахи; heavy — тяжелый, тяжеловесный; тяжелый, тягостный). Alice was very nearly getting up and saying, 'Thank you, sir, for your interesting story' (Алиса уже почти что собралась встать и сказать: "Благодарю вас, сэр, за вашу интересную историю"), but she could not help thinking there must be more to come (но она не могла отделаться от мысли, что продолжение должно было последовать; cannot help doing smth. — быть не в состоянии удержаться от чего-либо; more — больший; добавочный, дополнительный, еще; to come — идти; ожидаться, предстоять), so she sat still and said nothing (поэтому она неподвижно сидела и молчала: «ничего не говорила»).

Alice was very nearly getting up and saying, 'Thank you, sir, for your interesting story,' but she could not help thinking there must be more to come, so she sat still and said nothing.

'When we were little (когда мы были маленьким),' the Mock Turtle went on at last, more calmly (продолжил наконец Псевдо-Черепаха уже более спокойно), though still sobbing a little now and then (хотя он по-прежнему всхлипывал немного время от времени), 'we went to school in the sea (мы ходили в школу /на дне/ моря). 'Why did you call him Tortoise, if he wasn't one (почему же вы называли ее Сухопутной Черепахой, если она таковой не была)?' Alice asked.
