So they got their tails fast in their mouths (поэтому они и засовывают свои хвосты крепко себе в рот). So they couldn't get them out again (так что они не могут снова вытащить их наружу). Alice looked down at them, and considered a little before she gave her answer (Алиса взглянула на них и задумалась ненадолго, прежде чем ответила). 'They're done with blacking, I believe (они начищены гуталином, я думаю).'

'Boots and shoes under the sea (под морем = на дне морском ботики и туфли),' the Gryphon went on in a deep voice (продолжил Грифон низким голосом), 'are done with a whiting (начищают мерланом; ср: whiting ['waItIN] — мерлан и whiting ['waItIN] — белила; отбеливание). 'Boots and shoes under the sea,' the Gryphon went on in a deep voice, 'are done with a whiting. Now you know.'

'And what are they made of (а из чего они сделаны)?' Alice asked in a tone of great curiosity (спросила Алиса тоном величайшего любопытства).

'Soles and eels, of course (из камбалы и угрей, конечно же; sole — ступня; подметка, подошва; sole — камбала, палтус; eel — угорь; heel — пятка; каблук),' the Gryphon replied rather impatiently (ответил Грифон довольно раздраженно): 'any shrimp could have told you that (любая креветка могла бы сказать тебе об этом).'

'If I'd been the whiting (если бы я была мерланом),' said Alice, whose thoughts were still running on the song (сказала Алиса, чьи мысли все еще были заняты песней; to run on smth. — зд. вращаться /вокруг какой-либо темы/), 'I'd have said to the porpoise, "Keep back, please: we don't want you with us!"
