The Lobster Quadrille

The Mock Turtle sighed deeply (Псевдо-Черепаха глубоко вздохнул), and drew the back of one flapper across his eyes (и провел тыльной стороной своего плавника по глазам; to draw — тащить, волочить; перемещать, передвигать). He looked at Alice, and tried to speak (он взглянул на Алису и попытался заговорить), but for a minute or two sobs choked his voice (но минуту или две рыдания душили его голос).

'Same as if he had a bone in his throat (ну совсем словно у него кость в горле /застряла/),' said the Gryphon (сказал Грифон): and it set to work shaking him and punching him in the back (и принялся за работу и стал трясти его, и ударять его кулаком по спине; to punch — нанести удар кулаком). At last the Mock Turtle recovered his voice (наконец к Псевдо-Черепахе вновь вернулся голос; to recover — получать обратно, возвращать себе; вновь обретать), and, with tears running down his cheeks, he went on again (и, со слезами, которые текли по его щекам, он снова продолжил; to run — бежать, бегать; течь, литься):—

flapper ['flxpq], sob [sPb], choke [tSqVk], throat [TrqVt], punching ['pAntSIN], cheek [tSi:k]

'Same as if he had a bone in his throat,' said the Gryphon: and it set to work shaking him and punching him in the back. At last the Mock Turtle recovered his voice, and, with tears running down his cheeks, he went on again:—

'No, indeed (нет, действительно),' said Alice. 'What sort of a dance is it (а что это за танец)?'

'You may not have lived much under the sea—' (I haven't,' said Alice)—'and perhaps you were never even introduced to a lobster—' (Alice began to say 'I once tasted—' but checked herself hastily, and said 'No, never') '—so you can have no idea what a delightful thing a Lobster Quadrille is!'

'No, indeed,' said Alice. 'What sort of a dance is it?'

'Why (как),' said the Gryphon, 'you first form into a line along the sea-shore (сперва выстраиваешься в ряд вдоль морского побережья; to form — придавать форму, вид; строиться; line — линия; строй, ряд)—'

'Two lines (в два ряда)!' cried the Mock Turtle (закричал Псевдо-Черепаха). 'Seals (тюлени), turtles (морские черепахи), salmon, and so on (лососи и так далее); then, when you've cleared all the jelly-fish out of the way (затем, когда уберешь всех медуз с дороги; to clear — очищать; убирать, устранять препятствия; jelly — желе; студень; jelly-fish — медуза)—'

'That generally takes some time (а это обычно занимает много времени),' interrupted the Gryphon (прервал /его/ Грифон).

'—you advance twice (делаешь два шага вперед; to advance — продвигаться, идти вперед; twice — дважды, два раза)—'

'Each with a lobster as a partner (и у каждого омар в качестве партнера)!' cried the Gryphon (крикнул Грифон).

seashore ['si:SO:], seal [si:l], turtle [tE:tl], salmon ['sxmqn], jelly-fish ['dZelIfIS], advance [qd'vQ:ns], partner ['pQ:tnq]

'Why,' said the Gryphon, 'you first form into a line along the sea-shore—'

'Two lines!' cried the Mock Turtle. 'Seals, turtles, salmon, and so on; then, when you've cleared all the jelly-fish out of the way—'

'That generally takes some time,' interrupted the Gryphon.

'—you advance twice—'

'Each with a lobster as a partner!' cried the Gryphon.

'Of course (конечно),' the Mock Turtle said: 'advance twice, set to partners (продвигаешься на два шага вперед, повернувшись к партнерам; to set — поставить, установить; принять определенное положение и произвести несколько шагов, повернувшись лицом к партнеру или танцору справа или слева; partner — участник, соучастник; партнер /в танцах/)—'

'—change lobsters, and retire in same order (обмениваешься омарами и возвращаешься назад в таком же порядке),' continued the Gryphon (продолжил Грифон).

'Then, you know (а потом, знаешь ли),' the Mock Turtle went on, 'you throw the (бросаешь…)—'

'The lobsters (омаров)!' shouted the Gryphon, with a bound into the air (прокричал Грифон, подпрыгнув в воздух; bound — прыжок, скачок).

'—as far out to sea as you can (так далеко в море, как только можешь)—'

'Swim after them (плывешь вслед за ними)!' screamed the Gryphon (вопил Грифон).

'Back to land again, and that's all the first figure (возвращаешься снова на берег и это все первая фигура; land — земля, суша),' said the Mock Turtle, suddenly dropping his voice (сказал Псевдо-Черепаха, внезапно понижая голос; to drop — капать, стекать каплями; снижать, понижать); and the two creatures, who had been jumping about like mad things all this time (и два создания, которые все это время прыгали по бережку, словно сумасшедшие), sat down again very sadly and quietly, and looked at Alice (сели снова очень печально и спокойно = приняв печальный и смирный вид и посмотрели на Алису).

'Of course,' the Mock Turtle said: 'advance twice, set to partners—'

'—change lobsters, and retire in same order,' continued the Gryphon.

'Then, you know,' the Mock Turtle went on, 'you throw the—'

'The lobsters!' shouted the Gryphon, with a bound into the air.

'—as far out to sea as you can—'

'Swim after them!' screamed the Gryphon.
