In the Enemy's Camp (в лагере врага)

THE red glare of the torch, lighting up the interior of the block-house (красный

свет факела, озаряя внутреннее пространство блокгауза; glare —

ослепительный свет, сияние), showed me the worst of my apprehensions

realized (показал мне, что худшие мои дурные предчувствия подтвердились;

apprehension — мрачное предчувствие, опасение; to realize — осуществлять,

претворять в жизнь). The pirates were in possession of the house and stores

(пираты овладели домом и припасами): there was the cask of cognac (тут был и

бочонок с коньяком), there were the pork and bread, as before (и свинина с

сухарями, как и раньше); and, what tenfold increased my horror (и, что

десятикратно усилило мой ужас), not a sign of any prisoner (ни следа какого-

либо пленника). I could only judge that all had perished (я мог лишь

предположить: «судить», что все они погибли), and my heart smote me sorely

(и мое сердце раздиралось укором: «и мое сердце ударило меня болезненно»;

There were six of the buccaneers, all told (там находилось шестеро пиратов, в

живых). Five of them were on their feet, flushed and swollen (пятеро из них

sixth had only risen upon his elbow (шестой лишь приподнялся на локте): he

was deadly pale, and the blood-stained bandage round his head told (он был

том) that he had recently been wounded, and still more recently dressed (что он

был недавно ранен и совсем недавно перевязан). I remembered the man who

had been shot and had run back among the woods in the great attack (я вспомнил

большого нападения), and doubted not that this was he (и не сомневался, что
